Sarvis,
Why wouldn't oil companies earn record profits? They get to sell their oil at a higher price because demand exceeds supply? That's a great situation to be in for a commodity producer.

Re: Damn Bush and Gas Prices
The converse to Torkur's argument is that decades of being refused access to enormous reserves in Alaska and elsewhere for purported environmental reasons didn't help either. But ultimately policy makes very little difference here. The market ultimately rules. When the price of gasoline gets to a ce...

There is a tremendous amount of data being evaluated in the intelligence community. You would have to expect that going backwards in time you could find clues that you might have missed or misinterpreted concerning OBL's location. It would be strange if there wasn't such data. I think Botef's conspi...

All in all it was a pretty successful outcome. It probably would have behooved the administration to control the information a little better from all the various officials who spoke about the matter afterwards. All sorts of conflicting info was released and then corrections issued. But that's basica...

No, not at all Ragorn. I think the higher you pay, the better pool of applicants to choose from. You will absolutely be able to choose more qualified people if you offer higher compensation. But the goal isn't perfection. Otherwise we would be paying teachers $500,000 per year so the best and the br...

It works in baseball too. It comes down to what you believe a 'qualified applicant' is. If a qualified applicant for your shortstop position is a solid defender and will hit .250 with 5 to 10 home runs, you can probably offer less than a million per year. If you want Troy Tulowitzki you will have to...

It's common sense. The higher the compensation the more people will apply. If you disagree then that is your prerogative, but it's silly.

borrowing money at 0% and buying a 100% safe investment at 3% means a guaranteed profit. Why not? Even if you have inflation you make money because you pay back the loan in devalued dollars. Either way you look at it you just earn the spread between 0 and 3%.
