Fun with Lent!

Postby Grungar » Mon Mar 03, 2003 12:20 pm

Yeah, so Lent starts this Wednesday, and being the weirdo Catholic that I am, I give up random stuff in observance of Lent. It's kinda fun. Well, the observances aren't so much random as they are kind of odd. For instance, could you go 40 days without the mud? 40 days without listening to music of your choice? 40 days without caffeine? I think it's a pretty cool thing, and the whole idea behind it is groovy too. But then again, I'm just weird and sleep deprived. So yeah, I thought it'd be kinda interesting to see what yous peoples think. Not that it'll have much influence in what I actually do, mind you... Just that yeah I'm not making much, if any, sense right now.

I have a friend who gives up corn for Lent every year. He doesn't like corn, so that works out quite well for him.

I'm quite the atheiest in truth, however my wife and her family are catholics, albeit not extremely religious types.
Anyways, having never done anything for "lent", nor cared at all about it, this year we are giving up junk food for the 6 weeks.
Apparently my wife assures me this does not include chocolate.

It doesn't.

Chocolate is a perfectly natural food, rich in several important nutrients. Like anything of course, it is possible to overindulge....

Ash wednesday- The day jesus died on the cross.

marks first day of lent.
Lent=40 day period of fasting, which ends on easter sunday

(fat tuesday, last day of mardi gras, came into existence because people pigged out the day before ash wednesday cuz it was the last day they could eat meat for the next 40 days)

Old rules - no meat at all, give up something

pseudo rules - no meat on friday, give up something

common observance - give up something, eat fish on friday

Ash wednesday=holy day of obligation (you gotta go to church)
If you go to church, the priest smears some black ink (supposedly ashes) on your forehead, which represents something that i dont remember, probably purity or some shit like that

so from ash wednesday until easter you are supposed to give something up, to honor the time between when jesus died and when he rose from the dead(good friday, they noticed the rock was missing from his tomb), then he returned to the apostles (easter sunday 2 days later) and then rose to heaven(ascention thursday, i believe this is the thursday following easter?).

i dunno if ascention thursday is, but good friday is also a holy day of obligation, which means you have to go to church again.

Your supposed to light a candle every friday, three candles are pink and one is purple; the purple one is for good friday, i dunno what the hell thats all about.

Its a time of reflection to think about all the stuff jesus did for you, including letting the romans tack him up on a cross and kill him for "your sins". This is the supposed origin of the guilt complex that the catholic church instills in most of its followers..."be a good person because jesus died for your sins!"

If you couldn't tell im a non-believer:) This is the stuff i remember from catholic school, but i only went to catholic school in elementary school so some of this may be wrong/inaccurate because of my bad memory, and the fact that it was common to lie to the little kids about holidays because they wouldn't be able to understand the real significance yet, so they dumbed it down alot.

That was Good Friday. Three days later, He rose from the dead (Easter Sunday).

They actually are ashes, the ashes of the palm fronds from the previous year's Palm Sunday, mixed with some holy water. The ashes remind us of our mortality.

That's Advent, the season before Christmas, and the colours are reversed. Three purples, one pink. Pink is the third week of Advent. Each candle lit on a Sunday, I believe.

At least that's my understanding of it. Here's some more info on it:
