Actually both uses are considered proper depending on the context.

A vast number: the myriads of bees in the hive.

So you see, using it as a adjective exlcludes using of, and using it as a noun requires it.

Not getting back into it, noun form is technically acceptable but horrible form But I just like to give Hoppil a hard time about it, and this was too funny for nouns OR adjectives.
