question about something we\'ve all \'eaten\'

Postby Thalen » Thu Mar 29, 2001 7:42 pm

I saw someone asking this in a previous thread. I thought it was interesting and deserved an answer. What the heck are iron rations composed of? I hate to think of what it is if 1. An adventurer can live off that and water 2. It also has the word 'iron' in it Image

I'd say some sort of jerky and/or dried fruit.

That or sweet, delicious burritos

well as far as i know the "iron" part refers to how perishiable the rations is.

"Iron rations" keep longer than "rations" as far as 2ed AD&D goes Image

In the third edition, there are 'trail rations' which consists of 'compact, dry, high-energy foods suitable for travel, such as jerky, dried fruit, hardtack, and nuts'.

On the other spectrum, in Toril, 'iron rations' consist of 'You see nothing special.'

There is certainly a difference between these two kinds of rations. The mystery MUST be unravelled as to the secret ingredients in the Toril rations that make them so nutritious yet utterly unidentifiable and totally unremarkable.

Wait a second, Dormithel. If the 'iron' part refers to how long the ration will last, wouldn't that mean that the standard Twinky(tm) would be considered a 'diamond ration'?

It probably just means standard, long-lasting rations not ment to be analyzed too closely. I doubt in a fantasy world they're canned. Just think of iron rations as dependsing on where yu from:

Barbies = dried strips of beef
Dorf = probably, literally iron
Doogies = myconid slices (anyone remember the old computer game Dungeon Master from FTL?)
Drow = dried rothe bits
Gnomes = raw gems
Grey elves = granola
Humans = spam
Ogre = halfling on a stick
Snakes = live rats
Squids = dried brain strips
Trolls = bones and the slimy stuff that grows on spam

Haven't you read Dragonlance?

Quith Pa I believe it was called. it was an assortment of dried fruits and crap the elves gave the heroes to sustain them. Caramon complained cause they were wussy Image

Standard rations is dried goods, fruit and the like.

Iron rations, as far as I know it, is salt cured foods. Cured strips of beef, rabbit, chicken, etc. It's got protein, whereas the standard 'dried' rations do not.

I was just hit with a bizarre vision of Paul Hogan with a hat and a rather large knife.

"That's not a knife, this is a knife!"

"No, that's a spoon."

"Oh, I see you've played knifey-spooney before!"
