Dark spell for illusionists?

Postby Nassis » Sun Nov 11, 2001 4:02 am

How about giving illusionists a spell that shields a room from daylight sufficiently to let ultras see? Maybe even one that follows the caster (like psi globe) or entire zone...

As a lot of what they do is manipulate (the plane of) shadows and what is seen, it would be very appropriate for the class.

Something like "shade", 10th circle for zone effect, 8-9th for follow caster, 5-7 for stationary.

"The area slowly darkens as shadows seem to creep out from under all things and rise to soften the glaring light from the sun."
...or something.

shade (vt)
1) a) vt, to shelter or screen by intercepting radiated light or heat
b) vt, to cover with a shade

I've seen some illus spells like darkness in the D&D 3rd edition books.

1. Net of Shadows - which darkens the room.
2. Shadow Mask - protects eyes from light/darkness/gaze

Franky that would seem the most logical outta the classes that can do it already...

Personally I think pretty much anything that would let ultras see in daylight would be absurdly overpowered, and basically negate the one down side of those evil races.

Possible a single room spell with moderate to short duration would be acceptable.. but something that moves with the caster is too strong, and a 'zone effect' would just be insanely powerful.

Regardless of the balance question.. it is a game. Never liked the idea of people having to sit around for stretches of a time til its dark out.. doesn't seem like fun.

think that would be great spell for illusionists not that they need any more good spells.

the fact that you would have to cast the spell makes it relatively useless, nothing can be at squid when leading a outdoors zone. unless we can get control weather to make it dark again =)

A good idea. Those goodies who oppose it seems like they havent played a darkie at all. I'll see what they'll say after getting into the daylight with aggro tracking mob behind them. Sitting/idling during daytime was so boring to me that I will not play darkie anymore at all, though they do have some innates, those innates are negated by the damned daylight effect. So adding a moving shadow to illusionist and maybe aome high-level zone shadow spell seems like a good idea to me.

great idea, might be too strong

Hey Kuurg, we need a shaman to control weather so the darkies can see...

Well, the idea certainly makes sense. I am unsure how to balance it appropriately, but I bet it could be worked out.

chanters already have solidfog...
Yeah I guess it would make sense to have illus have a veil of darkness. But make the effect only extend to so many other people, so a group of 15 will need 3-4 illus just so they can all see.

the only thing i dont like about this spell idea is that it only benefits evil races. That and illusionists are certainly not hurting for power or prestige. Prolly the number one twink class?

My pleasure.

I wouldn't have, except for the quote by Corth that was already in there from when Kiryan bumped it. =)

Plus, we all need to be aware of when imms DO get to things, not just the times they ignore threads.

Guess I'll use Mori's propensity for old thread bumping to actually accomplish something useful.

Can any coder comment on the fact that Sun Shadow was changed to make it uncastable in combat? Just curious if this was for balance or just a mistake. It loses a lot of its usefulness with this change.

The spell could 'float' with the caster. If anybody receives benefit (be it only grouped people do or it's a true room effect) they could make a check every minute or round, whatever, vs. possibly a sunbeam coming thru the shroud of darkness and blinding them. That kind of risk seems extreme but the ability for evils to get a little break seems ok to me.
