The High Road

Lilira. Teflor believed that he could never understand why she was so willing to follow his path. Earlier that evening he had knocked on her door at the Three Kegs Inn in Baulder's Gate, only to find that she was nowhere to be found. Near the door he found a note and under her pillow he confirmed his suspicion. Her belongings had left with her on her own quest.

She took off into the night, making it almost impossible to track her but for her note.

Hillsfar.

Teflor had turned his back on those lands long, long ago, and painful memories burned through his retinas into the back of his head from that simple word scrawled onto that sheet of paper. The ranger summoned all of his stamina and courage, tearing a streak across the realms for Hillsfar.

The road to Hillsfar is a journey in itself. South, across the Chionthar River and through the Forest of Sharp Teeth. After that, east through the city of Neshkal, following the Dragon Trail alongside the banks of the Chionthar east through the Sunset Vale where we cross the great river once again. The next leg took the ranger south on Dusk Road, past the eastern gates of Iriaebor down Traders Road to where it intersects with Skull Road.

Just thinking about the first half of the trip was making his head spin. It might have also just been the exhaustion. Just then an odd cavalry horse trotted on by mysteriously without a rider...

Riding hard and fast over the tops of the Storm Horn Mountains, then east across the Kings Forest, the Eveningstar bridge, and the Forest of Varsil, then the High Road past Arabel. The East Road sent him across the Masoner's Bridge, through Thunder Gap to the Merchant's Way.

The ranger rode until his legs were numb, through rain and snow until well beyond rider had collapsed, but the horse seemed to know which way to go. The body of the ranger slipped off and fell, leaving the exhausted horse on his way to the ground. The ranger bid the horse farewell with his blessing, and lay in the snow for quite some time. He soon struggled to his feet, and staggered over the Stone Road to Orbulin.

The ranger prayed quietly for the safety of his companion, as he struggled northwards on Rauthauvyr's Road, walking briskly past groggy trolls as they just barely noticed him leaving in the first rays of morning light. Seeing the standing stone gave the ranger his last ounce of strength as he left eastward on the Moonsea Ride, stumbling at last into the region of Hillsfar.

Lilira didn't notice the ranger as she walked by his exhausted form, but Teflor noticed her puffy eyes and tear stained cheeks, and the way she walked with a deathly abandonment. He had to call out to her to get her attention. Her mission was a failure, in respect with what she had set out to do.

Teflor did what he could to help dry her tears as he walked her home. Some things must be done alone. The ranger offered Lilira the only thing that he could offer her.

That someone cared.
