The Color of Twilight

Postby othelil » Wed Dec 10, 2003 9:53 pm

Ok, this is just to settle a personal argument I was having with someone regarding what the typical conception of twilight is. So please, if you have time, tell me what color/s you first think of when you think of twilight. _Pretty please_ answer before reading any responses/definitions/etc.

Thanks! =)

Well, twilight is the time when the sun is right below the horizon and its lights are refracted, so it can be any number of colors.

I know what colors twilight usually isn't- neon green.

True, of course, but I'm primarily interested in what color people most commonly associate with twilight (assuming they have to pick, since some people invariably think of an actual twilight sky filled with all of the above).

Any number of colours as long as they are violet.

I remember my wife commenting, when she first moved out to L.A. about the beautiful sunset. Unfortunately I had to inform her that it was the smog causing that particular color.

Twilight implies a darkening of colours across the sky, darker away from the direction of the sun.

Your area on the planet and the prevailing atmospheric/weather conditions all affect the colours/effects we perceive.

I associate very dark blue to black with the term twilight.

Good luck answering that question. For an interesting visual essay on the subject, look at the late works of Fredrick Remington. The last 10 years or so of his career were spent trying to answer that question. I think he found out the answer was 'all of the above'

Actually If you are out on the ocean at sunset sometimes you can see the 'Green Wink' a neon green flash just before the sun goes down. Or so I've been told.

Fredrick Remington is a moron, he could have asked me and I'd have told him somewhere between dark blue and violet, but closer to violet.
