Frankly, until about halfway through I thought it was just a republican propaganda piece. Essentially until they had people fail to cheer for Bed, Baths & Beyond and Republicans... heh.

How you remembered a song from whitesnake is the more bothersome question.

Aren't you the brightest?

It mocks America, taking stabs at it's history (slavery), it's current media and political relationships (republicans, fuck yeah? fuck yeah!), and with popular American culture (the monster trucks, wwf, and dirt bike racing). It also takes a stab at American corporate culture (McDonalds, Walmart), as well as the intellectual culture (books! *silence*).

Funny thing, Sarvis, that conservative books dominate the New York Times bestseller's list. Anyway...

But don't worry Sarvis. I don't expect you to be able to interpret something as complex as a simple cartoon or web flash animation.

Something we are taught as Military folks is that when we are in other countires, we represent America, and based on our actions and words, thats what those people will see America as ......

that's sort of why i get pissy when the debates get too nasty ... not because i dont have my own opinions, or that I feel they should not have their opinion, but that im assuming that some of the people (on this mud) from different countires have never met americans .. and to them, Sarvis and Teflor represent America by what they have read

scary

I think what's scarier to them is seeing Americans who just don't seem to care at all Ambar. It reinforces every negative stereotype they have about us when people DON'T care what their president does or how he acts in the global community.

It scares them because then it seems as if Americans condone the cold shoulder Bush has given the world.

Yeah, you can follow a simple sentence! Notice I said UNTIL the republicans part? Notice how the books part comes AFTER that?

You still need reading lessons.

It's purely about the jingoistic attitude people like you take towards this country, thinking everything it does is great and unassailable.

Supporting our ill advised military excursions.
Supporting our culture of waste.
Celebrating corporations.

ALL things that Conservatives have claimed as Patriotic over the last four years.

Remember if you stop spending money the terrorists win! Not only that but questioning our invasion of Iraq is unpatriotic, which is why half the first segment deals with it... before announcing MORE patriotism!

The whole point of this video is to make people like you cry out that it's an attack on our country when it's actually a demonstration of all the things celebrated by conservatives.

It doesn't take any stabs at corporate culture, it celebrates it appropriately because taht is "patriotism." Remember, people like Imis9 think that if corporations are making record profits it's Right for America. It's "unpatriotic" to want limits on corporate interests.

Monster trucks? WWF? Can you say "Things popular in the south and midwest"? You know, the places where the election was largely decided, where not liking those things probably marks you as a pinko communist liberal? Not liking those things is un-American!

It's GOOD to have cops beating up a suspect, it's GOOD to have crying black kids, it's GOOD to have nothing but fast food. Anything else is un-American.

NFL? Baseball? Give those athletes a few million more dollars! They do important work! Let's have MORE role-model thugs and rapists who get MORE money! That's the AMERICAN way!

Vegas... an entire city devoted to sin. You guys want to get rid of New York and California, but no one ever says get rid of Vegas! Go Moral Majority!

Slavery? You know if Bush reinstituted slavery thousands of conservatives would cheer.

The problem with jingoism is you never know when you're a jingoist.

Why do you think anything you write on here matters? Seriously, do you just enjoy the argument? Because the fact of the matter is it does not make a damn bit of difference on here :P If you two want to argue politics keep it to the one thread that's already there, i'm personally tired of opening a thread and seeing you two children go back and forth, damn.

Get over it, seriously :P

I didn't yell, I yell when I see this in every other thread though.

And it's not so much I don't care about the country, I just don't care what your opinion is on A.) The country, and B.) Your opinion on what X has to say about the country.

Just consolidate it or something.

Last post for me considering this is turning into pretty much what i'm bitching about - Me telling you to shut up is not political, it's a personal opinion. How the fuck you can say it's political I don't know. I think you're a few banannas short of a bunch.

No one made me(us) mods, I'm just complaining because it's god damn annoying and people tend to agree if you haven't noticed other peoples comments on your threads. Damn, wake up.

God you people can't handle subtlety at all can you?

I wasn't saying it was an actual opinion, I was making the point that the only comments you've added to political threads lately are to tell me to shut up. (Just me too, I didn't notice you butting in when Teflor was responding to every post by sayin bullshit twenty times.)

And no, I haven't noticed any other negative comments EXCEPT from you and Ambar.

In fact, here's a quote in response to one of my posts that's interesting:

I have indeed noted that you have refrained from attacking religions in this thread simply because they disagree with your viewpoint on things. I am a little relieved to see at least that maturity on the boards.- Moritheil.

Oh wait... I guess there's also Klurg and Vahoks oh so mature trolling in the gay marriage thread.

Look, you don't like it. Fine. I'm sorry.

But I'm not about to stop calling out Teflor's idiocy just because you can't excercise a little discretion in what you read.

And quite frankly, Bed Bath and Beyond is purely a 'northern exposure' type of outlet (based in NJ, with strong retail presence in the northwest, west coast, and Michigan area). Furthermore, you can't exactly call the republicans the party of the rich or the party of big business. Look at the democratic party's suppporters: George Soros(hereby known as money man)? Steven Kirsch(hereby known as facist)? ...the Dixie Chicks(hereby known as stupid)? Along with hundreds of other large business supporters... Funny how you seem to not be able to attack points like that. Seeing as how they are the truth... I'm not the jingoist here.

Ah yes, the books.

I dunno.

Sorry Teflor, can't do all of your thinking for you.

My best guess:

No one says F--- Yeah! after showing the books, so it could symbolize the way conservatives seem to have put their heads in the ground by not becoming informed on the issues.

Or just how they'll only read books from one side, thus making conservative books become top sellers. What was your reaction when I showed you those books about Bush lying? Something about liberal bias?

But apparently conservative bias is A-OK!

Conservative Bias... F--- YEAH!

Just a question Teflor...I'm not going to get into the discussion between you and Sarvis, but..

This week's NYT best seller list -

1. America (The book) - Liberal
2. When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? - Anarchist? :)
3. not relevent
4. How to Talk to a Liberal - Conservative
5-6. not relevent
7. What's the Matter With Kansas? - haven't read, but I _think_ it's more of a liberal slant
8-11. not relevent
12. My Life - I think Bill's book might have a liberal basis
13. American Soldier - again, haven't read, but probably more of a conservative slant to it
14-16. not relevent

Now, of course this is just this week, but I _am_ the one that updates our library's NYT bestseller list every week, and while I don't have numbers in front of me (I'm lazy), it seems that _usually_ the liberal based books sell more than conservative. If you have a link to show actual hard data, I'd be interested...professional curiosity, as it were.

Actually, the Conservatives are the ones who stay informed on the issues. Ever hear of Rush? NPR? Or any form of news radio? I've yet to see a program that wasn't geared towards a liberal audience. (Although I Know of one that is no longer on the air)

Furthermore, the people in this cartoon are clearly democrats. They're the ones not yelling F--- Yeah! to the books.

Or just how they'll only read books from one side, thus making conservative books become top sellers. What was your reaction when I showed you those books about Bush lying? Something about liberal bias?

But apparently conservative bias is A-OK!

Conservative Bias... F--- YEAH!

Actually, the Conservatives are the ones who stay informed on the issues. Ever hear of Rush? NPR? Or any form of news radio? I've yet to see a program that wasn't geared towards a liberal audience.

Furthermore, the people in this cartoon are clearly democrats. They're the ones not yelling F--- Yeah! to the books.

That's funny considering the survey released a coupe weeks before the election which showed a far higher percentage of Bush supporters didn't know what he stood for, while the Kerry supporters pretty much knew exactly what Kerry stood for.

Yes, I've heard of Rush. That's called propaganda.

I've been listening to NPR on the way to work since a couple weeks before the election. In fact, I think posted something from there on one of these threads... can't say I've heard anything on there that would make people support bush.

Oh, by the way: What's your support for the claim that it's democrats in the video? Democrats hate corporations, remember?

But then again, Brett Favre's autobiogaphy, 'Farve' is the #8 overall on the NYT bestseller's list this week (fiction and nonfiction, paperback and hardcover).

Perhaps we are doomed as a nation.

Yeah, the only time non-republicans tune into NPR. They said F--- Yeah to the dems, and were very quiet for the Republicans.

Oh and by the way, Democrats like Jim Walton (President of Walmart) LOVE corporations.

I've been saying THAT since Bush was re-elected!

Yeah, the only time non-republicans tune into NPR.

I said, SINCE you idiot. I hadn't before then because I just wasn't really taking an interest in politics. I get most of my news from the net anyway...

Or does the internet have a liberal bias now?

So?

Conservatives aren't even supporting the republican party anymore. American Conservative magazine couldn't even endorse Bush for the election, they basically ran an article stating reasons to vote for every candidate EXCEPT Bush. Well, actually one writer did give a reason for voting Bush, which I don't remember exactly but I think was just that "he's not Kerry."

So it could be conservatives in that video who are disillusioned with the republican party.

If you have a link to show actual hard data, I'd be interested...professional curiosity, as it were.

Since I can't seem to come up with any information, it's pretty well buried, I'm going to have to defer to you as a professional authority. Just a question, though, if you would. Is conservative literature a rare sight on the NYT list?

Also, I would like to point out that there have been quite a number of #1's on the conservative reading list.

Would have been like that with any president up there. Even if we voted for Lyndon LaRouche (arguably doomed faster).

Exactly what I'm talking about. None of you gave a damn before, and it wasn't being informed that made you give a damn now. It takes years to become informed.

The information superhighway is prone to speeding. That's about it.

Ok, then who the hell voted for Bush in enough numbers that gave him the win?

No, because if people had voted for ANYONE other than Bush it would show that the populace wasn't retarded.

But a populace who is willing to vote for Bush AND put Favre's book at the top of the best seller list makes sense...

Yes, Bush proved to me that I should give a damn.

How is THAT a good thing?

Oh wait... I guess there's also Klurg and Vahoks oh so mature trolling in the gay marriage thread.

Fine, you baited me into bashing you so here we go!

Mature??? You're the one that sounds like a liberal asshole. You nitpick every post. You try to sound intelligent, but with each post, you fail. You fail to understand the simple concept of my mocking is point out how ridiculous you sound. You're just like debating with a child... you stick your fingers in your ears and babble nonsence. I'm SOOOOOOOO sorry my posts weren't up to your high level of maturity. I guess I should spend all of my time searching for one quote on the internet that proves my precious point like you do. You really need to stop living in box and join reality like the rest of society. The whole purpose of the video is to poke fun at ALL Americans. Can you grasp that simple concept? Do you need to have an adult explain it to you? Or will your fingers be stuck in your ears at that point too?

The Whitesnake reference is the song "Here I Go Again". I knew you'd be SOOOO mature to turn this into another policital thread. See? My lack of immaturity caused me to mock you in advance. Thanks for taking the bait...you'll make a great fish someday.

The "big kids" aren't talking. Ms. Holier-than-thou Arilin would rather talk about cheese all day, and I've seen you make a grand total of 3 posts in which you tried to imply that I was intolerant because I disagree with you.

Funny how Sephraem and I are now having a very civil discussion about YOUR claim that marriage was Sacrament, when all you could do was insult me and run away.

As for making fun of Americans... I thought it was the liberals who were supposed to be self-loathing?

I don't feel that video had anything to do with me, though it had much to do with our current culture. Or are you trying to claim our current culture of exploitative corporations, wasteful consumption, shows of military force and mindless entertainment is a good thing?

Yes, the video makes fun of our culture. The culture celebrated by conservatives as American, the culture which people are un-american if they disagree with. It's about the Jingoistic attitude of Americans in the last election, claiming anything about America is great.

Well, you know, Sarvis, the reason why they're not talking to you can best be explained in this manner:

It occurs to me that, not only do you have a fundamental misunderstanding as to what marriage is, conceptually or figuratively, you also have no idea of what a ban is, conceptually, or figuratively.

You know, a gay couple married by means other than the federal government (which, by the way, currently no marriages are to begin with) still have the right to say that they are indeed married.

Where as a ban on say, nuclear weapons, having one would prompt thousands of law enforcement agents to barge into your home and place you in prison.

Your ban is much like the substance of your arguments: non-existant.
