I live in the quiet and lovely town of Gaithersburg, Maryland. It's in northern suburbs of the greater DC area, but is still old enough of a community to have a personality of it's own.

Even though chains like Chipotle are quickly making inroads into our business community, and despite high cost of rent, there is enough of a growing population to keep smaller, family name businesses (particularly when dealing with food) alive and well in our area.

We have many of the conveniences of living near a big city, as well as a small town feel where you still feel safe in your neighborhood (unless you live down Clopper Mill Road). Unfettered access via public transportation to the downtown areas provides unusual aspects to life here, including the Smithsonion institution, as well as the many facets of our government based in the city.

Nearby we are the proud hosts to the National Institutes Of Science and Technology, also known as NIST, which provide our area science students with a number of unique opportunities (Rer and I once entered a science competition there and took home first place..... well in elementary school - the competition wasn't that rough).

Other off-color venues like the Kennedy Center downtown provide for a little bit of theatrical reprise during the hot summer months, occasionally movies run on a huge outdoor screen down on the mall (the big grassy area in DC), as well as a large local market for entertainment.

Economically, we're the third fastest growing region in the country, with a burgeoning market for biochemists, bio technologists, computer sciences and engineering (as well as automotive mechanics and experienced chefs and service workers). We're also one of the most expensive counties to live in according to the National Low Income Housing Coalitiion.

Traffic sucks around the beltway. It sucks a big one. That's probably the worst thing about living here.
