If you want something custom built where you choose your components and have someone else put it together, I'd look at Monarch Computers. I got a barebones combo from them and when it arrived the motherboard was faulty. They replaced it no questions asked, even after one RMA number I had requested expired, and they even paid for return FedEx. Their customer service was friendly and prompt.

If you just want something funtional and don't care about the "guts", I'd go with Dell. If you choose Dell, search google for "dell coupons" in order to get money-saving coupon codes.

Yeah Monarch is pretty kickass for prebuild custom systems.
If you need support beware of Dell though, unless you enjoy being on hold for an hour and talking to some dude from Bangladesh that you can barely understand.

Nogs, my mom is completely computer illiterate and tried getting help from Dell. She said it was one of the worst experiences of her life because the people on the phone were 1) Hard to understand, 2) Rude, 3) Unable to even find the root cause of the problem.

From experience, Gateway is better about Customer Service - but God help you if you call for a replacement part and don't have the computer serial number in front of you!!!

I have heard that Best Buy, with their "New and Improved Computer Help Desk" (Geek Squad), is supposed to be really good in the Customer Service arena.

As far as Dell is concerned, beware the wait times yes, but a lot of the customer service branches are being moved back to north america. I should know I work in one of them. Also be warned, if you need software support its a fee based service, need to pick up an added contract if you wanna even get a software Tech on the line.
Not to be disloyal to my company, meh, but you may be looking at a lot of grief talking to Dell atm, unless of course you get me *grin* In which case you only get a little grief.

I've been using Gateway systems since 1995. Far better quality and service than anything Dell ever had to offer.

umm gateway blows.

if you got a lot of money to waste and want something pretty go with alienware

if you want to get the best pc you can affordably go monarch

if you just need run of the mill office work computers, get a dell. Try browsing through dell outlet with thier refurbs, great deals in there.

but dont ever EEEEEEVER buy a systemax computer from tiger direct.

Bah... just order the parts and build yer own!

I know nothing about pre-built computers... except that I'd avoid Packard Bell, and they don't exist anymore so no worries there!

It becomes such a different task when you're looking at about a hundred and fifty units :\ - which you might not be around to support next year.

No, you still have to worry :), HP is still around...and they bought out compaq. They're really trying to suck just as hard as they can, I guess.

If you're going to buy bulk, best bet is one of the larget corperations like dell or gateway. If you, or they, have the cash to spend Monarch or Voodoo. Voodoo has excellent computers and a great tech support staff.

Packard Bell, not Hewlett-Packard. There's a difference. ;)

Packard Bell used to sell computers made of refurbished parts as if they were new. My first computer was a PB, and came with a virus on the HD... heh.

I'd post something about Packard Bell but I'm afraid this thread would turn into a cripple fight.

Correction, HP definitely bought Compaq.

Not sure where Packard Bell came in, except, maybe, in reference to the suckiness? HP/Compaq is nowhere near as bad as Packard Bell. Still not good, unless you're talking printers or really high end processing systems - check out their Tandem/NSK servers.
