Comparisons between the Sygna & the Pasha Bulker

SYGNA
Norwegian bulk carrier, 53000 tonnes.
Built 1967, Norway.
Length 217.3m, Beam 29.9m.
Ran aground in a gale on Stockton Beach, north of Newcastle, 27 May 1974.
South-easterly wind gusts during this storm were reported to reach as high as 165 kmh.
Was one of only 3 of a total of 10 ships anchored off Newcastle at the time that did not promptly heed radio broadcast weather warnings & directives for ships to move out to sea.
Was on her maiden voyage, anchored approx. 4km off Newcastle, waiting for a load of 50,000 tonnes of coal destined for Europe at the time of the accident.
All crew safely evacuated, no injuries.
Had a total of 2136 tonnes of bunker oil, and 163 tonnes of diesel oil on board.
Lost approx. 700 tonnes of bunker oil during the beaching, no cleanup or recovery action was taken at that time.
Three major salvage attempts were made.
The first salvage attempt was made promptly after the storm had subsided, and caused the heavier stern section to sink into deeper water and the ship to "break it's back".
The second salvage attempt during early September 1974 refloated the stern briefly but it sank back down again.
The third salvage attempt during November 1974 caused a heavy oil spillage which spread along a 16km stretch of Stockton beach, after which bulldozers attempted to bury the oil in the sand above the high water mark (Ouch!)

MV PASHA BULKER
Japanese bulk carrier, 76741 tonnes.
Built July 2006, by Sasebo Heavy Industries Co.
Length 225m, Beam 32.2m.
Ran aground in a gale on Nobby's Beach, Newcastle, 08 June 2007.
South-easterly wind gusts during this storm were reported to reach as high as 125 kmh.
Was one of only 11 of a total of 56 ships anchored off Newcastle at the time that did not promptly heed radio broadcast weather warnings & directives for ships to move out to sea.
Was anchored offshore from Newcastle, waiting a load of 58,000 tonnes of coal, had discharged much of her ballast in preparation of soon entering port during the 12th June.
All crew safely evacuated, no injuries.
Had a total of 700 tonnes of fuel oil, and 38 tonnes of diesel oil and 40 tonnes of lube oil on board.
Estimated minor dribbles of oil lost during beaching/weeks thereafter on beach.
The first major salvage attempt was made on Thursday 28th June 2007 attempting to float the vessel on the high king tide around 7pm - only minor movement of the vessel was achieved during this attempt.
