Area Wanks!

Postby Dizzin » Wed Dec 31, 2003 2:14 pm

Thanks for all the new zones lately, though I've sure noticed something surprising.. they're all.. within 50 rooms of Waterdeep! Now, I'm not terribly surprised by this since pretty much every staff member in the game is a goodie, but do you suppose when you guys come up with a new exp zone, you could place it somewhere near DK almost half the time? The last exp zone put anywhere near DK was minotaur's.. and that frankly isn't much of one to begin with.

This is something I really think one of the higher-level Area wanks should try to look at. I mean, the last 2 exp zones to go in dont have some story that forces them to go up near WD. With a couple very minor room desc changes, they could be shoved in the marching mountains or even off of the rocky trail near Nizari etc. I mean.. it would seem only fair that evils deserve a new exp zone near them. DK is nice and all, but it can get boring fast. And aside from DK, there's no good exping zone anywhere close. Not like WD which has ship, tower, DS, now Randar's and Moon Temple, all within spitting distance.

Shrug. Just more bitterness to go in with the Ranger threads. :P

Some UD exp zones would be nice too. Goodies are crying that evils use DS, stick something down under for us.

There IS an EXP zone that in the UD, and unless I'm mistaken it gives artifically high exp. I still don't understand why no one goes there.

DS can easily be 1 or 2 manned, easily accessibale mobs, and alot of em. It takes maybe 15 minutes just to get to the that zone, not all the mobs are easily gotten to, and there are not that many to kill. Finally, DS still gives better xp.

Downgrade DS. Doing Blip for exp is just silly, its a long trip, requires a bigger group, and has much more dangerous mobs. In all ways superior to DS, except far inferior in exps.

Being fairly new to UD I don't know what zone you're talking about. Only exp zone I know of down there is settlement.

So I'll give the generic answer and say, write one. Areamakers can put zones where they want them (within reason). You could be the next zone writer! And, by doing it yourself, you won't be able to complain anymore.

Let me know when they start tracking, and there is a few agro wandering mobs in there;)

The campaign for the removal of exp zones continues.

I'd think a friendly OLC or a better coded editor would inspire such things. When even the current area heads tell you not to use the current editor and just build your zone via the 10 year old docs way.. can we say behind the times?

In short, if building areas was a lot easier there would be a lot more areas being pumped into the mud.

So I'll give you the generic answer and say, code a better editor for them.

That is tempting. I got the zone docs from dug then had some hard drive problems (downloaded too much porn of thanuk's mom) and lost it. Guess I should get my ass back in gear and make a darkie exp zone.

Okies. Firstly, if I ever become an area wank, I hereby promise to leak every SINGLE piece of information I possibly can to every single person, including quest files, item info, the equipment/zone point evaluater and anything else I can get my hands on.. so.. there, now I'll never be allowed to be a zone writer and no one can tell me to write a damn area myself. :P

And secondly, it's a good thing that areas people can put their zone wherever they want. But it is the JOB of the Forgers to look after balance of the mud. I dont think it would be hard that when the high-level area guys do their walkthrough of new zones near completion, they decide that instead of sticking them all up around the goodie hangout, maybe putting one near the evil hangout nearly half the time would be fair. I really doubt that the writers of the new exp zones are so attached to their location that they'd refuse to make minor changes to it if Cyric went and asked if it was okay if the zone location was moved to Mir.

Mind you, I'm not advocating moving them now. But in the future, it's something that should really be looked at.

Who said the lives of evil races were suppose to be equal/fair when compared to goodies? AND please, if the great difficult on this mud is one has to travel for ten minutes to reach any exp zone...

Uh, how should I put this?

I have been reliably informed that there is supposedly stuff slated to go in for the UD dwellers as well as the goodies.

So, lets say I wanna write a zone. How do you go about getting the area making tools?

Ask Cyric. roysoto@yahoo.com as Area overlord he in charge of TE and should be able to send you what you need. I have the .17 version I'd be happy to send to you if you snag me online.

It's easier than that now, even.

We have a URL that has the whole package:

1. How to submit your zone idea
2. How to make the zone (includes the areadocs and a copy of TE)
3. How to submit the finished zone and how the zone gets tested and reviewed once it's submitted

Ask your friendly imm for details.

Last time somebody posted the areas addie, it wasn't the one Kossuth just gave. It was, in fact, a completely different site.

Incidentally, do they have that whole issue worked out with them not having any clue which zones are already being worked on so they approve multiple people to do the same zone, or is that still an issue?

Seeing as how part of the process is a formal proposal of the area, I don't see that happening. :)
