Guard Skill for Paladins

Postby Ashiwi » Thu Mar 03, 2005 6:30 pm

GUARD
Applied skill.

Syntax: guard <target>
Class/Level: Paladin 30th

The guard skill allows those with the skill to attempt to automatically
rescue the person they specify as the person they are guarding.

See Also: RESCUE

I'm so glad Paladins were given a new skill, but this doesn't seem to jive with the idea of "guarding" a particular person. I've seen this skill at work on other muds, and it always gave a reduced chance for a mob to switch to the guarded PC. When a mob would try to switch, the guarding PC had a high chance of jumping in front of the mob, intercepting the attack and becoming the new target. Any chance that little extra bit of leverage might be considered to create the illusion of actively attempting to maintain a guard on another PC?

Also, when not in combat, the guard skill would automatically cause the guarding PC to intercept incoming attacks, which makes complete sense, since somebody on guard should be able to see an attack before it comes, in most situations. This would be a huge blessing for groups who might have to ress a PC in an aggro zone.

Okay, Vhaeraun informed me that the guard skill is basically working the way I've seen it before, instead of the guarded PC having to be tanking for it to activate, which is how I read the help file. So ignore this!

I still don't understand why it's Paladin only... Should be for Warriors as well...

Glad to see one of my ideas I suggested to Shev 3-4 years ago (think I suggested it as Protect) finally got implemented! Was this part of Homeland code? :P Also, I agree with Rer...why isn't it available for AP/Warriors as well?

This is part of Homeland code and I believe it use to work on every hit. I also believe it was paladin only on Homeland too.
It will be fixed in Toril 2.0.

Actually I think Guard only went to paladins, regular warriors, and maybe weaponmasters on Homeland. I don't believe that antis had it(I may be wrong) but I'm nearly possitive Berserkers didn't have it.

Antis had it for sure, so did weaps, not 100% on zerkers either, but who would guard with an ogre zerker anyways.

guard is just like rescue actually, it's just if you are guarding someone you are paying special attention to that person. On homeland guard was essentianly a coded rescue trigger for lack of a better description. It worked faster than a trigger could. So if you have the rescue skill, guard would also seem to go with it.

A key difference between rescue and guard (as i understand it) is that guard can rescue up to 7 times per round. So..Mr cleric has every mob in izans switch to him, and the paladin can potentially make 7 rescues in 1 round with the gaurd skill PLUS make a normal rescue.

That was my understanding after speaking with a paladin who was testing it and Shev. With the current switch code, 80% or more of mobs switch to the same player anyways (sorry clerics) Allowing a single playing to defend against that many rescues seems a bit out of balance.

I do like the skill idea, and I was fishing this idea around several years ago. It should either only work 2-4times/round, or it should interfere with tanking skills, or lag your ability to do a standard rescue for a couple rounds.

Just some thoughts-nice to see new code.

It would be nice to see different mobs have a better chance of bypassing a guard attempt. For example, an enormous creature like a large dragon might just bowl the paladin over to get to its target.
