Magma

Its WAY too difficult with the new dragon code, !track, and combat luring stuff roaming everywhere. There's just too many mobs and far too many drakes.

We actually were very tight, very solid, took us 8 hours including time to CR at end, we didnt win in the end. Kiryan going to have a crack at it tomorrow I think, last day of holidays for me, nuts! I think it could be done with just the right group combo on last fight. I know I wont be doing it again tho hehe :) was fun once! was harder than tia ever was, harder than BC, that's a LOT of dragons in one day hehe.

i'd say try it with 4 rogues/rangers, more than 1 shaman, and a couple of paladins next time. spell damage is a horrible idea for several reasons... MR, dragon procs that knock you down.

however at this point, id say dresk fight is at least comparable to bel and if not harder, requires a group specifically designed for it (no caster damage). You have too many dragon area / bash procs going off for a group to stay in more than 10 rounds. With the insta healing, your hard pressed to make any headway on the fight even if you can get spells off and/or bring your run cycle time down.

The mobs wandering causes logistical headaches and prevents the players from getting in a grove. The fight being fleeable perhaps makes it more difficult than if you were going in with the mentality that you're willing to spank to kill 1 mob which is how we used to approach bel when we brought invokers and we pretty much only managed to kill 1 mob per run. I remember one trip to BC where we killed one mob for the first 2 runs (which should make the fight easier) then spanked on the next 4 runs because people started fleeing out when they felt like it.

I had some thoughts on this fight, and I came to realize our one critical failure.

We had no elementalist.

Sending in a spelled fire elemental, then doing feeb/blackmantle runs (with the casters having wimpy max and a good set of abort/flee trigs) would've been our best option at that point, I think. We only killed that first drake because a feeb was landed. PC tanks are not disposable like pets are, and if the tanks die, it just makes for a longer lag time between runs.

Of course, even this strategy is risky due to area procs, the possibility of the elemental getting roared out on entry, the mobs wandering, and even by some stretch, if the areas staff decides to make it even harder later on by making those mobs !aggro to pets.

Either way, I strongly feel feeb/blackmantle runs on the 5 drakes would work best. We had to do devourer fight that way once due to lack of invokerpower (tm).

We had an elementalist.

and I don't think you got it worked out yet, because even if the mental could take some of the damage (which it can't), you still would have to actually get a spell off.

I heard several complaints about being killed/bashed and forced to flee before getting even 1 spell off. I noticed a couple instances of people dieing 2-3 rounds after entry when they weren't even tanking.

Its not just the final fight... The sheer number of mobs in that zone is insane. Clearing takes forever because you can't just mosh through and smite at will.

There's a big difference between hard and stupid.

Hard requires players to be at the top of their game and have a diverse knowledge of tactics.

Stupid is being unable to stop or prevent certain events/procs from happening, no matter what, resulting in repeated death. Throwing bodies at a fight imho is not strategy, it's just an exp sink.

[Edited to remove flame]

Seriously, magma needs areas changes and dragon code needs to be fixed so that the same dragon can't proc 7 things at the same time (yes i do literally mean 7 things). I volunteer to playtest zones if that's what it takes to get things put in that aren't so blatantly broken.

ok...

i'm going to change my opinion after our 2nd attempt on this Dresk fight.

you must feeb and do runs on the fight.

If rogues and rangers are going to be effective they need to be 800 hps with vit, there is just too much area damage for a 500 hp player to survive long enough to do damage.

and kiryan i think your comment about mage damage doing nothing needs to be retracted. With the drakes debuffed, voker damaged seemed to be pretty sweet.

It's quite stupid and mundane to have to rely on 1 spell that makes or breaks a fight. Not talking about heal. MC is fun btw.
It will be fixed in Toril 2.0.

I really don't think sending pets would be useful, A: they would get roared instantly, drakes do 6 roars on entry usually, fat chance of a pet staying in. Second, the mentalist would have to risk being next to the room with the drakes more often, they move around A LOT.

Why aint the dragons healing eachother? They are one group. I think they should be changed so the dispel eachother on blackmantle. Or mabye make some special proc on blackmantle so you can't do tricks like that, but have to do fight straight up.

Dude diso, try that fight w/o them healing eachother and w/o a black mantle proc see how hard it is and then try to make it harder. I love that people complain about things that they don't do. 7 breathing roaring buffeting dragons in 1 room doesn't need to be made harder.

I didn't grab an actual log, but I know one time when I sent a pet in it was like...

of w
A fire elemental blazes west.

A fire elemental blazes in from the west.

The tanks go west.

---

Debuffing definitely seems to be the strategy for that fight. The thing that's scary to me is that, in my own personal experience, feeb has an annoyingly low land percentage... but then I think it's a "spellcast enchantment" so it's probably best suited for chanters to land.

The best part, si that after 50+corpses, you got a 60hp mage only ring and 2dam pff boots to show for it.

People wouldn't complain about the craziness of that fight if they'd actually get a good item from it.

The boots should be put back to 2/2 imo..or 3dam.

And I know the fight has rare load eq-but unless a rare item loads, you spend 8hours for two items that are pretty much 2nd tier...if that

with wail, curse, hex, and flux spell damage becomes plausible... however, you still have to remain standing or 2-3 rounds (or alive in rogues case) to actually do damage. This is of course much more difficult until the first couple mobs are dead.

Best case, I doubt you could do just the dresk fight alone in less than 1 hour and 25 corpses with lucky paras. Average I bet your looking at least 2.5 hours and 50 corpses.

its a good fight, don't downgrade it...

but getting 2 equal (or probably better) pieces off the grid then getting 2 (3 if you count orb) not so great pieces off the end fight seems backwards. move the belt to dresk, move the anicent ring of liquid rock to grid. move orb to grid, move bag of engulfing doors to dresk. make the crown and ring load. that might make it worth it.
and tonights winner in the Toril EQ lottery is demi belt and skull earring!

I noticed the 'rares' (not very rare at all) on magma plane have been getting assassinated even after they were upped in level. This has to be stopped at once before a select group of people have 20 of the best belt in the game before it is changed AKA magma ring. I know since I've posted it I'm going to have a go, I really don't want to miss out on the opportunity to have the best belt in the game so easily, specially since I couldn't get it leading the whole zone. Won't be on my conscious so bad since we have made pretty clear for a few weeks that those mobs are so seriously nerfed and design flawed. It isn't like someone has been first to put in some hard work and find khanjari quest or something, it is blatant almost bug (cept you can't call it a bug as it was put in on purpose) abuse and takes no skill whatsoever.

Suggested action = make a group of magmas and 2 gargauntuan drakes follow the mobs, and make the mobs !assass.

Remove the items from game completely and make all or at least 3 drakon items load at end to balance magma in terms of rewards.

First, if you follow the story of magma, or at least this is how I came to understand it, the magma elementals want the drakes gone. The invaded their home plane and just don't want them there, so you wouldn't see them in a group.
Second, you wouldn't see those rare mobs being all chummy with the elementals or drakes, so grouping them up wouldn't look right.

Now that being said, we know magma is messed up. The last round of changes were my fault as I ran it through the eq calcer and followed what it said things should be. Obviously its not right and we're looking at how to get the rares and the end rewards in line with what they should be. Hopefully the next time its changed will be for the better.

It would be nice if the eq from magma didn't get toally pwned...since some of us have spent 6+hours up there earning it.

I put in more than enough time to warrent the current stats on the tattoo.

Hell, if you changed magma's name to 'izans' or 'musp invasion', the belt would be 50hp 15ac prot all, and the rogue ring would be like 8dam at least!

This zone is crazy hard-which is fine. I like the idea of a zone having the potential to spank us all over the map:)

But the eq is crazy lame in comparison to simple zones with very little spank potential that take 1/4 the time. Downgrading the grid items isn't going to make anyone happy...they just need to be made so that you cant twink them, or moved to the final fight.

Or maybe the grid rares only pop after killing x number of drakes..or after dresk dies or something

Or give the grid rares a proc that eats sneaky hidden rogues.

how can a piece of eq that was pocketed in the first 25 minutes of zone justify the current stats.

while its regrettable that about 2 people spent more than 4 hours getting the belt, everyone else spent less than 1 hour.

wouldn't be the first time you got screwed *whistle*

From what i've seen, i give a big thumbs down to the changes,

There are hardly any tattoos in the game, and all or most of them were earned when the grid was packed with nasty roaring dragons.

I just about died when I saw the complete crappiness of the new stats. i was, however, informed that the number of grid mobs was drastically reduced. if that's the case, I'll give it another thumbs down.

Hard zones are awesome. Just make it so people have to do the zone as intended to reap the equally awesome rewards.

I'd *much* rather see nice eq loading in a hard zone than more mediocre eq loading in zones that got downgraded.

All that needs to happen here is to make the rares !assass, and in some sort of squad so that they cant be twinked. Or move the rares to dresk. Or hide them on a random drake. Or make the rares load hidden so that you have a hard time getting them vis to twink them...

What didn't need to happen was to horribly downgrade an item that used to be quite good and sought after into a 2nd tier piece of eq that 90 minutes in izans owns once again.

Even though magma was hard, I really enjoyed it. Dresk could have used a little downgrade, but the grid itself was challenging, and not very predictable. The problem with so many zones is that they become cookie cutter (izans for example). Any zone that presents a completely different challenge every time it's led has much more replay value.

It's also frusterating to rearrange your eq around new eq you get, only to have stats get changed.

I'd strongly recommend a different fix to magma than the one presented.

(edit: I'm not trying to discredit your work marth, I just am sad to see this zone get downgraded in difficulty and rewards)

It also seems that dresk's eq got some much needed love (assuming dresk/grid retained the badassedness that they had last run). Unfortunatly, out of all the dresk eq available, only 1 person earned the new stats by doing the new fight.

Maybe I'm just being bitter, and not seeing the flaw in my logic, but it seems like a different approach to this situation would be in order :)

Is it wrong of me to suggest giving it some time and thorough exploration before faulting the new changes?

The eq might be balanced for diff/reward currently, but let's compare a few things...

the tattoo as of when I wrote this had lost-
66% of its ac
36% of its hp
40% of its saves

from a 6hour magma run for a mage only belt

izans belt as of when i wrote this has-
22% more hp
250% more ac
!bit flag (which should be worth a lot imo)
and the same saves than the current tattoo

from a 90minute zone that also yields more items per run, and has *far* less spank potential.

That just doesn't make sense. I know some people 'twinked' their grid rares, but the staff could have nipped that in the bud *months* ago. instead, they are punishing people who explore tactics and take risks by downgrading what they earned for the efforts when it's really the staff's fault in the first place for allowing this 'twinkage' to go on for so long. Hell, how many magma bands were done when dresk was killable with 2 people? Does that mean that the band isnt worthy of it's current stats? I'd say no.

Ok, i'm ranting. Hopefully something in here makes sense-cause it's all perfectly clear in meh head :)

The Dresk fight hasn't changed at all since the zone first went in. He's always had the same number of followers, always been the same level, ect.

The number of mobs on the grid hasn't changed. It was something that was being discussed and then tossed out as more people posted that they liked the difficulty.

While there were one or two people that actually did do the zone and managed to get a rare piece of eq, there were many more who simply either assassinated the mob when they were messed up, or waited till the mob was alone in some quiet part of the zone and solo'd it. Sadly, the many outweigh the few in this case and the items were changed. The rewards on Dresk should now make the zone worthwhile to do rather then just hunting the rares for some of the best gear in those slots and leaving.
Moving the rares to Dresk would look silly, imho, and would take away some of what the zone has to offer. Do you really see a drake holding a marionette? Do you see him wearing a tattoo of snakes? Didn't think so, they just plain fit the mobs they are on.

Now, the rares might get looked at and bumped up a bit, but I really wouldn't look for them to be anywhere near what they were previously if they do.

Also, please don't compare zones that are currently undergoing changes to bring them inline with how they need to be with zones that are obviously in need of being looked at (Izan's, ect).

Sorry Maedor, but this is one of those situations where they're damned if they do, and damned if they don't. They've tried all kinds of solutions when restatting gear, but it never fails to piss off somebody, no matter what tactic they use.

I'd still like to see a thorough exploration of the changes so that people can register experienced issues with Magma before the flaming begins.

The issue with Izan's is a completely separate topic. Almost everybody has stated an opinion on it so far, and instead of holding other zones up to it for comparison, Magma should be reevaluated in its own right. I'd hate to see the game lose a bloodfest of a zone if Magma was made nicer for the masses, though. I'd rather see a zone kept hard and the rewards match the challenge.

Nice work Marthammor! :) Bigger items at the end, little ones at the start *hi5*

I agree mightily that reducing number of mobs on the grid wouldn't work. It would then be sparse as opposed to hard. The actual balance between size of the grid and number on mobs on it really does make a fun challenge :)
