Zones rules for the toril-noob zoner
I zoned for the first time last night here on toril...
Asked cleric who he was vitting, he hadn't a clue it seemed
Group died, i worded as instructed
In general a wonderful experience, got one of the four items and a whopping 4% exp.
so my question is... what are the rules for zoning besides the obvious...
do not flee
do not wander
do not flee and wander
do not wander and flee
tog wimpy 0
UNLESS it's ok to do so
As a shaman I pretty much toss hex's/silence and gheals

Rule No. 1: Listen to the leader.
Rule No. 2: Listen to the leader.
and so on...
As a new zoner, it may be a good idea to ask advice from other people who play the class you're playing for tips on what to do. It's VERY helpful to do this if there is another of your class in the same zone group as you are in. Watch what they do, ask them what to do in certain situations which arise (but don't pester too much--they are doing a job, after all, and are probably busy). In the end, experience--real experience--is how your skills will be honed.
Good luck!

Know your job. If you're an Enchanter, don't start casting nukes, even when you aren't actively buffing. If you're a cleric, don't even think about having holy word memorized. You're there to do a job... know what it is, and do it, and don't fuck around until you can do your job in your sleep.

wow harsh, basically you learn by doing, exp groups help learn your class and leaders will say things like silence mage or whatever, if in doubt of what you need to do ask. Shamans gheal when people get blinded, generally speaking.

It's not harsh at all. It's the truth of the matter. Do a zone like BC and have people not listen to the leader, or fuckoff and do what they want. See how long it takes to get ungrouped as a cleric if you're (un)holy wording when you should be healing(Unless your Glorishan or Kaln. They suck, bad rolemodels).
It is a job, you're there to keep people alive and in doing so have a shot at some loot and see what you can get on in. Ragorn is right, and so is Birile.
Another thing, don't feel bad about asking questions. Ask someone who's your class, or you know who's played your class during X zone what's up. If you're a warrior, ask someone you know what's bashable, or what's going to be expected.
So, I agree with Rags and Birile completely. And if you think just saying that is harsh, why don't you do a zone with Jegzed leading, or another big evil race player back in the day. See what it gets people who don't do their job.
Shevarash OOC: 'what can I say, I'm attracted to crazy chicks and really short dudes'
Best advice I can give and the advice that has worked for people that I have brought to the mud:
If you have never been to the zone, send the leader a tell and let them know. They might be depending on you to do something particular and if you don't do it, it only makes you look bad. If you send a tell, you avoid razzing by others in the group and will get coached on how they expect you to do things.
If you don't know your class as well as you want to, let the leader know. It is much better for them to know up front than it is for them to think you were slacking off and screwed things up. (For those of you who think they would just replace you, you are probably wrong. 9 times out of 10, the leader has recruited another person in the same class and kept the original in the group to assist and learn).
Granted, if you are a core class, you might not get into the high end zones right off, but you will earn enough respect that you will be taken eventually.
I'll support that last one with a bit of personal experience:
When BC was still only for those people who had a deathwish, I got into the group. Kiryan was leading and I told him that I had never been there. His advice was to listen to him, do as he said and to do it quickly. I listened as best as I could (even figured out a trigger to make to listen better) and died 16 times. ... I didn't make the best showing. However, the very next time he led it, I was invited.
Granted, BC isn't your standard zone, but I will maintain that the best policy is to be honest with your group leader, and if you have questions, ask them through tells.
Asking through tells is actually 2 part. Part 1: I believe that most members in the group will have more faith in somebody who doesn't have to ask questions (they are allowed to think the person knows his/her class well enough). Part 2: The leader knows that you are in need of help and can coach you through tells and does not end up saying "SoandSo really caused us to spank because he did this when he should have done that"
It is really sad that Mori is not leading anymore. He was the training wheels that everybody should have had :) He killed me plenty, but to this day I would group with him. He might have had his share of spanks, but he also turned out his share of people that really worked well in a crisis.

Yeh I agree in general :)
If you're not sure what to do, send a tell to the leader. I'd rather someone ask me three times if they should silence a particular demon or something rather than getting the group smitten and having an arduous CR. It's the leaders job to lead and let people know what to do, so they shouldn't get cranky at you for asking a zone specific question!
Be honest! There's nothing wrong with bing new at something every is new at mudding at some stage and all people are new at almost everything for their whole lives! Be honest so the leader can asses what's going on, send you extra info or assign another groupee to help you along on you way. It sure beats spanking cos someone assumed you were an experience level 50 cleric.
Do what the leader tells you to do, not what some hotshot who thinks they know best tells you. I get very frustrated when someone new does something wrong and it messes up the plan because 'but XXXX told them to do this'. There are lots of different ways to approach zones and mobs, and everyone needs to stick to the one the leader is doing, all wheels must be going in the same direction.
If you know for sure the leader has forgot something or is going to spank and lose everyone's gear send them a friendly happy tell. A reminder that they forgot to put up prots before a dragon will be appreciated. A gsay that they are a newb will not in general, maybe they really are new and are under just as much stress as you, so appreciate that at all times.
Don't ever call a spellup if your not the leader. If the leader said let the spells fall, it's for a good reason. You need to enter serious combat with your spells fresh or a place to mem and keep them up. The leader will coordinate this.
Shaman specific, shaman's don't mem very fast and don't do much damage anyhow, make sure your ancestral shields and gheals are in ready supply, they are more often needed in bursts than not, so having one left isn't the time to be furying.
Your spirit tank is pretty good. If your short on warriors, set up a way that you can take a little bit of the tanking load onto your spirit in big fights, even if it dies it makes the fight easier for your group for a while, especially if it involves bleed procs from demons.
In most modern zones, you can flee just fine, and it is very often better than dying to a sloppy rescuer if you are an important class like the shammy who gets switched to a LOT. Check with the leader.

read the first post he's been to one zone only, I would think with the tone of reply it would scare any newbie in to not zoning. I mean geez it's supose to be fun but people make it sound like taking a final exam, you fail it and your future is over. Friendly advise would go futher than scaring someone and profanity.

Because it's an example. I don't expect him to end up in BC tomorrow, but if you're going to pick something as an example pick something from the harder end of the spectrum as opposed to say sg, or something like that.

Zone rules are zone rules, whether it is Podville or BC. The rules Rags posted are FAR from harsh if you want to complete the zone with minimal deaths and optimal time. Your group needs to listen to you, and each member should want to be an integral part of a successful group.
Players who perform less than optimumally with no improvement time after time after time are going to find themselves groupless after a time, those who learn and listen will find themselves grouped LOTS. Leaders will tolerate mistakes if they are not made time after time.
I still dont see how that was harsh :P Fatah is a good player, he will listen and learn very quickly!

It was meant to be a little harsh.
If you read the logs on this board, you get a glimpse of some people doing some pretty funny stuff. A newbie who read one of Gormal's holy word logs might get some pretty wonky ideas about what clerics do in zones. I posted using the tone that I did to instill some sense of gravity to the answer.
When you're doing small group experience, very little is at stake. It's not very hard, and maybe you can sneak in a fireball between stones once in a while, for some extra damage experience. It doesn't really matter who loots, and you can fuck off and go AFK and stuff and it doesn't really hurt anyone. But when you get into a zone, and the leader calls for a full spellup and you're taking an unannounced dump, you're going to come back to 14 very annoyed people and a bunch of fading spells. At worst, you'll come back to the login screen, or to yourself sitting in a room by yourself and 14 corpses a room away.
Toril is 95% politics. Once you get branded a stupid newbie, or worse, an inattentive player who isn't willing to follow directions, your time here is over. This isn't WoW, you can't just tell your group to go fuck themselves and then blend into the other 40,000 anonymous faces on the server. You fuck up here, and you fuck up enough, and you could very realistically find yourself on your ass with no sympathetic leaders to take you places. Maybe I sound a little harsh because it is a little harsh... but just look at some of the other threads here, where people are yelling at each other because a leader claimed one item on one zone run five years ago. Toril is the elephant that never forgets, and it's in the best interest of every newbie to make sure that they never do anything memorable enough to qualify for a BBS thread of their own.

Toril is the elephant that never forgets, and it's in the best interest of every newbie to make sure that they never do anything memorable enough to qualify for a BBS thread of their own.

It will be fixed in Toril 2.0.

You should fix up the line spacing a bit, the forum font distorts the question mark and the right side of the bird's hat.

I got to do another zone last night... here are my thoughts
OMG I MISSED SLEEP FOR THAT?!
there were like 5 items...
and wtf is up w/ the split process, mrwite, dice roll...
do leaders ever just glance around and hang out items as they see fit?
OMG SPELL OUT EVERY 2 MINS...
shaman vit doesn't last nearly as long as cleric vit? someone got numbers on that?
Anyways... all in all I did have an excellent time in Elemental Towers, no deaths if i remember correctly, AND i even got like 10% exp, woot n stuff
*bird the goodie who joined last minute and handed out crap for not multi-zoning btw*

Yes Hsoj, they do handouts - or more accurately, they DID handouts until cries of favoritism became too much to bear. This occurred more often on the ebil side.
There is still the occasional claim/handout, but it requires up front notification, and unanimous consent from all involved. The split is probably the closest thing to fair, but it requires that the gods of the dice don't hate you, and that you zone frequently.

Really, you don't. So even if it takes you ten trips to get the item you want, you'll eventually get it and then you'll never need to worry about it again.

eq splits are the suckiest thing about this game. No zone deals out enough eq for an entire group, and if it did, the eq would all suck. Don't expect to get some eq every zone you go to, thats not gonna happen. If you get lucky and get in some groups with some good people, the leader will require the person that wins (gets) eq to hand down the item he replaces to someone of the leaders choosing. That system is called a hand down system. Ask about it next time you get in a zone group, some are more than willing to do that.

About eq splits, then the new zonager should know to underbid.
don't bid on the bestest eq in the zone. 12 ppl are gonna bid on that. Bid on something that would be an upgrade for you, but that others don't bid. Ask someone you trust what the think few will bid on.
An example could be jot invasion where few player bid on a thorn shield even though its a fine shield.

More importantly, you're gaining zoning experience and networking with players so they know your name and invite you more. Reputation goes a long way. :)

I'm an evil. As sad as it is, currently you only need to be a warm body above lvl 41 to get an invite to zone. *smirk*

Don't be so sure, I've led a couple evil groups and there are definitely some evils I wouldn't invite no matter what--same goes for the goodies.
And watch the "warm body" references--your yuan-ti friends may take it to heart.
