I know that everyone is busy specially at this time of year but is there a way to possibly implement an auto reboot at say 80 to 90 hrs? Could give everyone a warning that there will be an autoreboot in 1 hr, 30 mins 10 mins to warn people its coming.
Just a thought so hate the 90+ hr up times

Auto Reboot

Re: Auto Reboot
it's seriously been requested Amena for almost a decade. In all likelihood your post will recieve a response within a week or so, apologising for a lack of whatever... boots will be consistently shorter for a week beyond that..and then they will go back to being weekly events, give or take new code.
sorry, but that's the facts jack. just the facts.

Re: Auto Reboot
The reason it's never gotten done is that we worry that by setting a hard deadline it will discourage people from doing anything when that deadline approaches, OR inflict harsh penalties on people caught by an auto-reboot while CR'ing or something. Because of that, the goal has always been to make zones refresh without a reboot.
However, if the general consensus is that a scheduled reboot every x hours would be preferable, that's something we could consider coding. Feel free to use this thread to discuss it.

Re: Auto Reboot
A state-remembering mud, regardless of reboots/crashes, with more randomness in rare pops.
This would reduce the mad dash for cash/rares at boot.
It would also keep the mud alive during 50+ hour boots.
there should be no difference between a freshly booted mud, and a mud that's been up 100+ hours.
This would require some changes, such as eq/boss pops being tied to something outside of boot sequence.
Well.. would require a lot of changes, but since we're talking goals, we might as well aim high.

Re: Auto Reboot
I don't think auto-reboot code can work.
We just need immortals to be on more often or more willing and able to offer a reboot if the uptime has been longer than 40 or 50 hrs, and if there is no-one online that objects to one, etc.

Re: Auto Reboot
A long time ago I played on a mud that had a reboot stone. It required no admin interference at all; all logged on players had to be on the stone room and touch stone. After that, there would be a 5 minute wait in case anyone changed their mind or whatever (there was a command to cancel the reboot that anyone could run from anywhere in the world), and then it would reboot. The stone had a random 40 to 60 hour cooldown so it wouldn't get abused for rare-hunting.
