The wagon-maker looked in on his warehouse, the wagons
stacked like firewood. Many of them were now good for nothing but.
It had so long since the days that the adventurers had
become merchants, but corruption had lead to it being outlawed.
The wagon-maker gave a low cackle of glee. He would sell
his wagons again. The merchants had grown fearful of the monsters
and bandits that surrounded each city beyond the range of its
guards, and had demanded the protection and patronage of their
former competitors. The cowards. The wagon-maker shrugged. At
least he never pretended to bravery.

Intro aside ...
I'm not sure if this had been suggested, but might be a
way to bring back trade. I wasn't around when it stopped, so, again,
not sure if this would be desirable, but here's the idea ...
A teamster could be hired to carry the goods of PCs. If
killed, the goods would remain there until either another teamster
could be brought (making it neccessary to split the guards) or perhaps
the teamster could be unkillable, and just only move if had full hps
(making it neccessary to guard the caravan and the teamster until
he was healed). The teamster would stop at night like a real person,
and continue at dawn -- moving more realistically, but perhaps too slow
for the average player.
Or, alternatively, the PCs could hire as guards to a caravan
that was already setting out -- although I am unsure how this could
be done.
Items would have a tax-stamp placed on them before they left,
and the broker would know better than to buy back those goods --
avoiding the 'wait and sell' method.

Trade Idea
This is a really cool idea!
What does everyone else think?

We used to have Trade on Sojourn, last wipe. I don't remember exactly why it was discontinued, but I do remember some people rolled it for all it was worth and made a nice bundle off of it.
Gormal tells you 'im a dwarven onion'
Gormal tells you 'always another beer-soaked layer'
Inama ASSOC:: 'though it may suit your fantasies to think so, i don't need oil for anything.'

Follows is hear-say
As with all good things, was abused. Imagine buying a bunch of items, and sitting there for about an hour or so. Sell the items back for a small profit. Torilish commodities trading -- except you were assured that the price would go back up, but without the risk (the bandits and such on the road).
It is hear-say because I was away during that period because of a disagreement (completely unrelated to trade).
Hope enjoyed the rp-ish intro.
Just to give you guys an idea on how the Homeland system worked in rough terms. We had various types of trade stuffs such as grain, gems, pottery, armor, weapons, wine, etc. Each city which as part of the trade system had "Demands" and "Supplies". We set it up so that each city had different ones so that you could not buy "Timber" in Arabel and sell it back. You would have to take it to a city which demanded it.
In addition, the random encounter system was based on the value of the cargo you were transporting in the wagon.

That's the way it worked....but you didn't have to wait an hour....it would flucuate somewhat....sometimes only took 15-20 mins...it was mad plat while it lasted! :)

Mabye something where you escord a merchant would be cool. Then you would have to walk the route.
Eg. agree to help a merchant get from CP to Menzo, then you would have to find a way to get them both levi and wb (if you went via dk). Then the walk would prolly take > 15 min. And thus could result in ok plat.
I don't think something where you buy stuff, get a wormhole and make instant plat even though you take up 2 players time should be implemented.

i dont think you should be able to walk from DK to menzo in 15 min. in real life that would be a few days time. even DK to BG is a long walk. i think you should walk at a more natural pace say from DK to menzo would take 1 real hour and a half but in fairness make it a safer route. and give a little more cash. this would give newbies something to look forward to plat wise. for example. a caravan from GN to MH would only take like 10 min cause its not that long of a walk. so it would yield less plats. but from WD to bg because it is a little longer and a little more dangerous would give more plat because of time and danger see?
i dont know what your problem is, but i bet its hard to pronounce

If I remember.. Trade for Soj3 was incredibly buggy as well. Also,, the weights on the items was crazy, so there was no running with few moves taken. If you had wanted to take a large enough load to make money, you had to buy a wagon and drag it up which swiped moves.
We loved doing it! It was a blast, and I'd love to see it come back.
