Area Creation & OLC

Was talking to Nazma last night about this and was curious if someone above could share what plans are instore for how future zones will be written. Will toril be adapting OLC any time soon and replace that awful outdated TE? Any time line on it replacing TE? Will the zone creation process be changed or tweaked at all (OLC zones could be worked on and then fleshed out towards the end instead of building an entire tech-prop before starting to write your zone in TE).

Thanks!

Tentative plans (and I do mean tentative):

1) Implement full Homeland OLC here
2) Require some level of offline building for first-time builders
3) Create a n00b testmud for new folks to try their hand at zone building once we know they're serious about it (otherwise everyone and their mother will have a zone in the works)

More to follow as we know how the OLC integration goes.

My exact thoughts! I think our current zone scheme works pretty well in terms of the pre-writing elements (Outline/Techprop). I just think that a lot of details could be exluded or shortened during the 2nd stage and brought more into focus during the actual writing process. I very much like the thought of designing the general layout/theme/mob types and then going back in OLC after constucting a 'shell' and fleshing out mobs/quests/etc etc.

Oooo Im so excited, this is something Toril needed really badly!

I'd be sort of looking forward to this as well, if I ever was able to prove I had any sort of stamina for a creative endeavor. I started working on a small zone some number of months ago, but it seemed like we had to specify a lot of things before hand that I really wanted to play with while I was actually writing the zone (number of mobs, specific level, etc).

Maybe I should dust off my graph paper pad and finish up what I have.. hmm...

What's the problem with everyone having a zone in the works?

Personally, I started going through the zone creation process, but I am putting it on hold for now while waiting to see the zones that are being ported over from Homeland. I want my zone to be original, and, since I havent seen any of the Homeland zones, I dont want to risk replication by accident.

Lack of coherent vision.

OLC would seriously rule.
I have an ENORMOUS zone that was well on its way to completion, which has been sitting gathering dust ever since I got my new computer.

The problem? TE editor is so old it is completely incompatible with my new system (keystrokes all produce wrong output) and cant be used at all. It was bad enough crashing all the time but...

Couldn't possibly finish up in text editor, I *really* need to be able to walk around in the zone at the least (even statically) to get a feel for the look of things, in order to write a good one.

PLZ PLZ PLZ OLC, even more than anything else, this is what Toril has needed for YEARS.

OLC is still slated. It is a high priority, of course.
Even once we have it up and functional, at least one zone will have to be done offline as Cyric pointed out in his post near the start of the thread.

The upside? With OLC in and working, it should be easy enough to strip a copy of the mud down to just the bare essintials code to come up with an offline editor that would look just like you were on the actual mud.
Of course, I just do areas and don't know code so that could be harder then it sounds, hehe.
