Toril 2.0 Update: Polymorph

Postby Shevarash » Fri Jul 25, 2008 10:09 pm

Polymorph

The polymorphing code is now finished. Polymorphing is the ability to turn a character into a different race and inherit all of the abilities of that race. All natural attacks and armor are carried over, as well as all physical ability scores. Mental stats, such as Int/Wis/Cha, are retained from the character's original race. The new race code makes this very easy, and doesn't require the old method of switching a player into an NPC.

While a relatively minor part of 2.0, Polymorphing is essential for druids as their inherent ability "Wildshape" is the ability to polymorph into an animal form. It's also used in some fun spells, such as:

Code: Select all

Spider Curse
---------------------
Transmutation

Level          :  Spider 6
Components     :  Somatic Verbal
Radius         :  None
Target         :  Character in world
Duration       :  Variable
Saving Throw   :  Will half

This spell magically forces the target into the form of a drider who then
must follow the will of the caster.

I'm not sure what you mean...this particular spell gives the victim a Willpower save to avoid it.

It's a Spider domain spell (the ansi didn't copy correctly, I fixed it above.)

This means it would be open to Drow clerics who worship Lloth and take the Spider domain.

Wow this is awesome! Polymorph is one of the coolest things from DnD that Ive always wished was implemented here :) This is in my Top 3 wishlist!

Course as a Druid, having shapechange fixed is a HUGE thing that the current code has neglected. Animal forms that are balanced? omg omg omg!

And using polymorph as an attack spells to turn a mob into a drider pet is a GREAT idea. This is the kind of thing that will make me actually roll a cleric (or 5) despite the fact that ppl might make me zone as cleric :X

Thanks for the update Shev! =)

Any chance there will be a furniture race in 2.0?

I find it so wierd that you don't really see the transformation when the illu cast massmorph.

hmm.. that makes me think of an old mud i used to play that had Furniture object types.

It was mainly used with thrones that were fast healing for whoever sat in them, but there were a few generic chairs or whatever that were fun to restring.

Glad to hear there is now decent code to handle these...

Is "natural attacks and armor" refering to naked hit/dam/ac?
Will spells (armor/vit/stone/di/...) be carried over as well?
Will it be possible to pick up stuff and interect with inventory?

Does this mean that the main use of Shapeshift today will be lost?

Could you comment on some of the scenarios you expect people to prefer druid shape vs animal shapes?
(Other than the obvious: I died, i need to cross a river/mountain to CR).

would polymorph be able to be cast on the caster him or herself? As in using polymorph to sneak into a city?

Man, only a great warrior like Kurz could dual wield Corth & Dornax!
Having said all that, the situation has been handled, so this thread is pretty much at an end. -Kossuth

And Nokie would come out of retirement to rule the Ottoman Empire as The Footstool King? It's a short and glorious road from toadstool to footstool.
