Sad News: Cardolan/Garal/Kossuth/etc.

It's been years since I've been on these forums but some of you may remember me - more of you (at least those who have been around a while) will remember my husband Jason, who went by several names (including one of the admins listed above). I know he's hopped on Toril now and then to chat, especially after Jaime (Veldrex) passed away so he hasn't been gone as long as I have. I played for a short time before WoW sucked us away, and I've pretty much forgotten how to do anything inside the MUD, so I decided to post here instead of coming in game to break this sad news.

Last Thursday Jason passed out at his office and his coworkers called 9-1-1; at the emergency room it was discovered that he had an aortic dissection and had to have emergency surgery that evening. He survived his first surgery and a second the next day but unfortunately on Sunday morning it appears a stray blood clot blocked the flow to his brain and we lost him. His mother, his brother and I made the difficult decision Sunday night to remove life support as there was zero chance he would recover.

Services will be held tomorrow at our church in Glendale, AZ. I'm sorry for the very late notice, it just occurred to me early this morning that there was an entire group of people here who knew and loved Jason that would have no other way to hear the news.

For those who are interested to know more or to find out about his memorial service, you can check out his Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/jcaid ... I posted on the myspace blog on Monday, and linked to the story of all that happened on my personal weblog.

On behalf of Jason, I'd like to thank you all for the community and friendship you'd given him for so many years. You're a great bunch overall, and some of you were very dear to him.

Tanasa, I am so very sorry for your loss. On a very personal level, Jason means something to me and always will. He was a co-worker, but beyond that he was my friend. I have missed his presence since he left and can say that Toril, for me, will never be the same without him poping on to chat. I am deeply moved by his passing and want you to know that he is loved by the staff and will continue to be someone I think very highly of til the end of my days.

I hope you and your loved ones can find peace and comfort during this hard time and if there should be anything at all I can do to assist you or ... anything, please let me know. We love Jason around here and that won't ever change.

Sincerely,

I'm really sorry to hear about this.

Cardolan was one of my close companions when I actively played the game, during Sojourn 2. He wasn't a member of Wanderlust, but he might as well have been. Often times, he was my go-to Invoker for a quick IC Vault or Jot run, because he was both a solid player and an all-around outstanding guy. He was one of the ones who kept the game going for me, and we kept in touch occasionally even after we both quit the game and went our separate ways. In a game of politics and high-strung emotions, Cardolan kept a level head as both a player and an admin. I'm really going to miss him.

Take it easy, Candyland. Ice Crag won't be the same without you.

I never really had dealings with him on a personal level. As an immort, he always struck me as being very fair and competent. And smart too. Perhaps he came off a little arrogant at times (as my quote demonstrates), but you know what.. a little arrogance once in a while isn't the worst thing in the world. Hell, I was so impressed with it that I adopted it for myself. He was certainly a huge part of this community, both as a player and an immort. I cannot imagine losing a loved one in such a sudden and unexpected manner. Please accept my condolences. You and your family are in my prayers.

My heart is broken to hear about this. I adored Cardie and missed him dearly when he stopped playing. He was always a sweet guy, very upbeat, positive, helpful, always there for anybody who needed him. I was thinking of him only a week ago, wondering where he was and what he was doing, and thinking how much I missed having him around.

My deepest and most heartfelt condolences to you and to your families. His presence will be truly missed.

I met Jason in person when we were Admins here (Laduguer) at the Phoenix airport. We had a beer and talked about all the fun things on the MUD, admin stuff and people... He was a very positve, fair and upbeat guy, a good person to be around.

I don't play here any longer, but I had to visit to say I'm going to miss him. Every time I pass through Phoenix I think of J, now more so when I do.

I'm very sorry T.

I can't begin to express my shock and dismay, as well as the overwhelming feelings of sorrow. To lose one of our own so young, and so tragically makes me take stock in my own life. Jason was a great friend, as a player, always there, and as an admin, he was one of the key reasons I spent so much time up there (Jergal). I haven't played in years, and didn't meet him in rl, but knew he'd be someone I'd have ended up lifelong friends with like Tayros.

My deepest condolences at your loss.

There just aren't words that would justify the shock, the disbelief .. I read your blogs and see huge strength to be able to tell your story so succinctly, the love shines thru amazingly .. Well-wishers ask *Is there anything I can do* .. No there isn't, but it seems to be the comfort that comes so easily to say ..

That son of a bitch went and died on us before paying a couple years of DB guild dues!

D,
Sorry I haven't been around much lately as I still don't have any internet at home. I heard this just the other day and now I finally have time to respond. I'm really not sure what to say... our crew is falling apart it seems. I won't post a whole lot on here since I only read these forums every few months, so please get a hold of me at gary@emovieposter.com and have Dave get a hold of me too. I tried to e-mail him but never got a response. Anyway, I never was very good at these things... I miss you guys :(

Sok, Taelin, the other Twyl and I spent countless days and nights with Jason playing Magic and Toril at college. He was a good and decent person, and I know that all of us college friends will miss him.

Denni, I don't know you outside of the one time that Laurel and I came down, but I know everything I need through what I saw in Jason. He exhibited a complete happiness and confidence the last time I saw him that he never had before. That was from you. I know that he spent his last years living the dream: happy, fullfilled and seeking the Lord. He was here for only a short time, but I think he finished well. Thank you Denni. My deepest condolences and prayers.

I heard there will be a memorial in California as well, can I get some more information to pass along? Sok Taelin, Twyl and Summer still live in SoCal.

Is Jason's WoW character for sale *whistle* totally kidding

first jaime now jason.

i went to college with cardolan, taelin and kiryan. it was a small school so we were close. all of use hanging out in kiryan's room. he was the only 1 who had his own room. of course it was the size of a walk in closet, but we manage to get like 10 people in there. good times.

funny story, one day i saw him eatting rice. just plain rice w/o meat, sause, nothing. i was like hey how can u eat that without anything. i guess it's an anglo thing. culture shock!

i can't make it to arizona, but is there something happening here in cali?

Man... If I could stop the tears long enough to compose my thoughts I have so much to say... but that will have to wait for a bit.

Denni,

I'm so sorry. I can remember standing there watching him look down the aisle waiting in anticipation of you, his bride. Michael is right. You were Jason's dream. The man I stood with that day at the front of the church was everything the 17 year old I first met had hoped to be, and it was because of you.

Know my prayers are yours. I pray God will bless you with His comfort as I know mine is not enough.

I will remember him always as my strong brother in faith and for his open genuine smile.

Justin
aka Taelin

To Sok, Michael and Jon,
Wish there were an easy way to get us together to remember and say our goodbyes. Maybe we can make sure something happens in honor of our lost brother. I have the contact information for the Wurts and others in the valley.
Give me a ring or shoot me an email

For those in Southern California, we are planning a memorial at the church where he grew up for Wednesday evening of next week, July 23 at 7:00 PM.

West Valley Christian Church
22450 Sherman Way
West Hills, CA

My mother and I will be attending as well, so I look forward to seeing some of you again... Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts. <3

Edited to add: Also, thank you to those who sent flowers (Shev and Shar <3) - there were some beautiful arrangements and it was overwhelming the amount of support from those who knew and loved him.

I cannot stop thinking about J, Toril, and everyone here who knew him. I know I've posted here before...

And with all this going on in my head I just wanted everyone here to know you are and always will be my friends, where ever we all end up or if we have differences ... whatever

I love you all and I hope that everyone takes J's unexpected leave to remind us all just how many people we touch in life. There's never the words, but the last one's I said to J was, "I'll talk to you soon, mate!" ... that's the last thing I said to him in Phoenix and I really hope that's true.

Honestly, don't leave anything, ANYTHING, where you wouldn't want the last thing said to friends to be. God, I'll miss ya bro.

Peace J. Good bye.

My first memories of Jason were with Essete and him as a lil' guy here. Essete was watching a movie one night while we were grouped and apparently there was a bear in the movie that was going to be killed, but it could talk and it said, "NO! Bear want to live!"... so from then on Essete would always say nobear. After he was gone, Jason and I used to greet each other with raebon all the time... I'll really miss him.

Raebon J, wherever you are.

My first post on this was one of shock. I've been trying to figure out ways to make it to Jason's memorial in California. I still don't think I can post anything that could do him justice. If it weren't for Jason, I probably wouldn't have even met Michael because, lets face it, Kiryan is a bit scary online (in real life he's better, sometimes.)

I think very highly of Jason and Denni. I admire her strength. Even though deep down I know this life is short and there is much more to come, it still doesn't make this much easier. Life is short. Be who you want to be.

I've retyped this so many times now over the past few days, and I really can't think of anything that would do this man justice. I'm going to try anyway. No mudder's death really has affected me this deeply until now.

I've known Jason since the days of Toril1, back even before the character Cardolan existed. I had always had great conversations with him. When he came up as Kossuth, he seemed pretty shocked at who I was, but nevertheless we still had a lot of fun. We would spend hours talking on the mud or ICQ about life, the mud, or whatever in general. We would get in all sorts of mischief (along with Dug!) playing pranks on Muma or whatever the day called for. Mechanical Uterus is still a classic.

He always tried to get me to move back to Phoenix, and I kept telling him we'd have to meet the next time I visited. I still haven't been back to visit my mom's family...and now I'll never get to meet him either. I really wish I could've gotten to know him on a more personal level, as he and I had a great friendship on the mud and he probably knew a lot more about me than 99% of the people I've ever been fortunate enough to be friends with in the 13 years I've been here.

I remember when we used to race to www.homestarrunner.com every week and see who would watch the newest Strong Bad cartoon first. When the Trogdor episode came out, we just knew his nickname would have to be the Burninator, as it suited his Imm name perfectly. I even made and strung him a weapon for it. If I recall, didn't we get a burninate command put in just for him? I knew there was at least an emoteto we made in the beginning. If not, we need to make it available for mortal use to honor him.

I remember when in the days he was in Drunken Bandits, we would all group up and do DS or whatever and the one afternoon we all got assigned #.gay. I think he was 3.gay, and I was 4. For a long time that's how we referred to each other.

Jason would always greet me with my trademark ! every time I logged on. He went out of his way to be friendly and socialize with most everyone. He never got involved in any clique, coming to the mud with the SoCal herd, and transitioning into several different guilds over time. His judgment as an imm was always fair, even if behind the scenes he wanted to strangle or eviscerate some people.

I wish there were more I could say, but I never had the pleasure of getting to know him personally. He was a great man and he seemed to be very happy and content in his life the past couple of years. I'm going to go drink a 31 beer salute to him in 4 hours now (if he were here he'd get the joke! :P).

Gonna miss you man, hope whatever's waiting for you on the other side has pirate flags, comic strips, and eternal salvation from idiocy.

This is totally shocking to me. I've been away from the Sojourn community for several months and just got the news. I knew Cardolan in his various forms since Sojourn 2 and I still vividly recall how he used to joke that he would meet me in person but never follow me anywhere. That kind of gentle mockery was certainly his right after spending hour after hour fishing my groups out of whatever hellhole I had dragged us into as I learned the ins and outs of grouping. It truly saddens me that I won't be able to take him up on the offer to meet in person this side of eternity.

Jason always had a word for me and I was always glad to talk to him. It seems no matter how bad a situation I found myself in, he could make me chuckle. Reading over this thread, I find that he was like that for everyone - he would remember you how you expected to be remembered, and he pretty much had a witty observation for any situation. We - all of Sojourn - are without exaggeration better for having known him.

Thank you for posting this even in your hour of grief. He will be sorely missed.

It's crazy. No matter how long I've been away from the digital land of 1's and 0's the people from this place really had a huge impact on where I am today.

I had the luxury of knowing Jason in person when I lived out in Cali (before he was married). Easily the most friendly and easy to like guy on the MUD.

I remember both Jason and Jamie coming out to spend New Years in my apartment in Lompoc, CA. This was year 2000 during the millenium. Jason kept saying during our planning of the party, "Dude, if this Y2K stuff goes down and all hell breaks loose, you better DAMN well believe I don't want to be in LA with the (crap) hits the fan!".

We had a number of parties and I had the chance to get to know Jason pretty well before moving back to the midwest.

Seriously saddened to hear what happened and my thoughts go out to his loved ones.

I knew him in many forms. More then I knew actually. I was never big on knowing mudders RL, I tired that once and I married her.

But Jason (weird calling him that since I just learned his name in this post) was a good guy. Not sure what else to say other than reiterate what Ryan said, never as a Mudder's death effected me like this.

You have my deepest sympathies and condolences.

First off, I'd like to apologize for this message being so late. I knew Jason only through Toril, but we were friends. I am so very sorry for your loss. He was a great person to talk to and to play the game with. When he was an admin, he never let our friendship get in the way of a fair decision (much to my dismay).

Le'sigh. As the years go by, news like this never ceases to sadden me, despite the fact that I have generally never been very popular en masse, I have made small friendships that have lasted beyond the boundaries of this cyberia. Perhaps somewhere in the game we could have a small zone built that would memoralize all of the people that we have lost over the years. No matter how much time has passed, I will always mourn the loss of a friend and kindred soul.

God be with you brother, I hope you and all of the other Torilites that welcomed you through the gates are watching over the families and friends that loved you here.

Today I checked this board as I do once every 6 months or so, to see familiar names, hear familiar laments. Instead I see real life, pain, sadness.

To Garal, I had some truly great times with you; you are missed. You were funny and skilled and did a nice job of balancing playing the game vs. admin'ing the game... no small feat for a Drunken Bandit.

To those who knew Jason, my condolences on your loss. What a tragedy.
