San Diego f-18 accident

Postby kwirl » Wed Dec 10, 2008 4:48 pm

"Please pray for him [the pilot] not to suffer from this accident, he is one of our treasures for the country. I don't blame him. I don't have any hard feelings. I know he did everything he could."

In the context of having been spoken by a man who just lost his entire family to (hopefully) a freak accident, this is one of the most humbling displays of compassion I have seen in a long time. Strength of character like this is just awe inspiring to see. I hope that this man is not forgotten by our country as the investigation lingers over the months.

I've spoken before about the waste and stupidity of frivolous lawsuits and punitive damages, but in a case such as this man's, isn't some form of compensation in order? How do we put a value on human life and familial love? Obviously we shouldn't just give him enough money to buy a quarter million dollar car and a 12 room mansion, but losing his wife and daughters ... every day of the rest of his life is a nightmare. At the very least, I would say that this man never owes our country a dime in taxes for as long as he lives.

Oh, and did anyone else enjoy the movie 'Reign over me'? - amazing movie if you don't mind the confusing feeling of shedding tears while watching an amazing Adam Sandler performance.

It's cool to start a thread about something like cabinet appointments without needing to provide a link -- it can be assumed everyone sorta catches the news.

On the other hand, I have no idea what you're talking about here.

Just to fill in some blanks in this story, it looks like a Navy Jet (an F-18 Hornet) was attempting an emergency landing at Miramar (now a Marine Corps Air Station and not the Navy Air Base featured in Top Gun) because it could not make it back to either Naval Base San Diego or Naval Air Station Point Mugu after losing the use of one engine, before the other failed and the plane crashed on some houses.

I guess it is my turn to be cold :(

What sort of compensation can repalce a family? I am sure SOMETHING will be done, but a family lived 3 miles away froma jet base .. a TRAINING base at that .. accidents happen

Any time a jet loses 1 of its engines, it requires an emergency landing, there are checklists for these situations, they practice these landings but nothing prepares you for reality .. in fact if successful, they would have performed an arrested landing using the jet's tailhook .. the loss of the second engine would have caused total flight control surface failure .. the pilot had no control except very basic functions, rudders flaps and ailerons with VERY limited movement ,, let alone the free fall of the landing gear and the hope the wheels would pop into place ..

Again nothing can repalce a family, I'm not sure what you are after here ..

As far as the jets being grounded recently, that stuff happens .. not often but it does happen

jets are examined for fatigue and cracks on a yearly basis, they undergo both x ray and die penetrant inspection .. they undergo MAJOR inspections (SDLM) where everything gets ripped out on a flight hourly basuis, cant remember flight hrs offhand, been too many years I guess

it happens .. live near a jet base and it happens more often :(

so sad tho :(

*sigh*

To be fair, it's not like the Navy had an easement or right-of-way to crash a jet through the living room.

At least, I don't think it's on the deed or recorded attachment.

That all being said, there are a lot of people who sacrifice for our country, even when they don't exactly volunteer to do so.
Teflor does. Teflor does not.

Being a jet engine mechanic myself, I'd like to knock the crap out of whoever signed that aircraft off as being cleared to fly.
For both engines to fail there was definitely something fundamentally wrong, someone didn't do their inspection and just pencil whipped it.
