README: Merger With HomelandMUD

Postby Shevarash » Thu Feb 17, 2005 10:53 pm

Sojourners,

I am pleased to announce a merger between TorilMUD and HomelandMUD. For those of you unfamiliar with it, HomelandMUD is a Forgotten Realms based MUD that is very similar to Toril and is run by former Sojourn players. They feature over 150 zones and a plethora of excellent code. Toril and Homeland will now join together to offer their combined worlds to the MUD community.

What does this mean to you?
------------------------------

1). Toril will not be changing names, address, or ownership.

2). Four Homeland staff members have joined the Toril staff.

3). The Homeland staff is working furiously to bring their zones and code into Toril. Work has already begin on converting their *many* zones.

4). Homeland Code will be evaluated and merged into Toril where applicable over the coming weeks and months.

5) We will be working on adjusting the layout of our world to be more accurate to the Forgotten Realms with the help of the Homeland zones. Some zones may get shifted around, some may be replaced completely.

6) Current Toril developments in progress (such as Tiamat) will not be affected by this merge.

------------------------------

We are all very excited about this merge and looking forward to a new era in development and productivity for Toril. Please give a warm welcome to the Homeland staff when you see them, their names are as follows:

Vhaeraun (Code)
Vaprak (Areas)
Shiallia (Areas)
Lathander (Areas)

There will be much more information in the coming days and weeks about the specific projects being merged into Toril...until then, feel free to post your questions on these forums.

Thank you for your time, and welcome to the Homelands staff and players!

So....will the homeland races be incorporated into Toril? Classes? Kits? etc?

I'm excited. :) I think this is the best thing that could have possibly happened.

Sucks though I can't bring my pfile over :(

This is so great! One thing I always admired about Homelands was how they followed the FR world so closely. The zones were also highly artistic, with many of them being real works of art, very complete, with a highly maintained standard for many of them. This could only be a positive move for Toril. Hopefully this will attract more playes, too.

This is indeed one of the best things ever to happen to this mud. Can't wait to see how this unfolds. Thanx for making this happen Vhaeraun, Tempus, and Forgers of Toril. :D

P.S. Best day in Soj/Toril history ever imo.

This sounds great, but has the zone limit issue been fixed? It wasn't that long ago that exp grids were removed because there wasn't enough room for new zones. I'm just curious how this is going to be dealt with.

Ya know... you guys could leave everything else behind except Homeland's zone editor and still come out way, way ahead. Homeland was blessed with some amazing coders from the outset, and I'm very excited about what they have to offer Toril.

It's been four years folks. Probably the only people left on here that I know are the grandkids of people I used to play with. But, if Dartan, Nokie, Folur, Corth, or anyone else that I used to run with back in the day are still around, look for me in game. I'll probably be on as Retark or my cleric Repis.

Homeland is where I've called home the last year or so. It's spoiled me. Espeically their pcorpse rot time rules, which allowed a player with a family and full-time job the chance to actually MUD again. Any chance an old-timer like me can have that code looked at?

Glad to see the merger, and everyone has been amazingly nice in welcoming me back! Look me up!

As a former areas builder on Homeland (Ghaunadaur), I was pleased to hear this news from Vaprak. It will even more pleasing to hear of the serious spankage inflicted when some of my more notorious zones are converted and put in. Even more so, seeing the many years of work put in on Homeland enjoyed by all our friends here on Toril.

::cough::

Are there any Toril players who DIDN'T build something for Homeland or Exile?

Incidentally, if Toril's getting Mielikki from Homelands, then Areas is now set with one of the best and most dedicated Areas staff members they will have ever seen.

Is Bruth importing?

Im not too sure about this merger thing.

I'll come back and give it a chance tho because I love and miss Homeland.
I hope Toril realizes what it has been given and makes a true and real effort to incorperate everything that has been done on Homeland to make it the great, if not well populated, mud that it is.

To all my friends from Homeland, and Toril, if you need any help.. give me a shout.. i play Baikalisan and Murissiyir as my mains.

Just so you all know, there is no feasable method to transfer player files from Homeland to Toril, and even if there were, it wouldn't be a fair conversion for anyone involved as Homeland's exp is "easier" than Toril, not to mention that the object files wouldn't convert well, especially until all Homeland zones are imported.

As far as OLC goes, we will definately be bringing the Homeland flavour of OLC to Toril, no question about it.

It is unrealistic to expect that everything from Homeland will find its way into Toril. Zones will definately almost all come over sooner or later. OLC will definately come over. The active Homeland staff will definately be coming over and is already hard at work. Many Homeland design concepts such as NPC races, the Homeland damage system, etc have a very good chance of coming in.

There are some things that are still being discussed, and many more things that just simply won't fit well on the merged MUD. The pre-merger staff of Toril greatly respect the work that the Homeland staff did to make an excellent MUD, and the pre-merger Homeland staff greatly respect the work that Toril has done to make an excellent MUD also. Therefore, we do not wish to take anything away from each other's work, nor step on one another's toes on our path to creating what we feel will be one of the best MUDs on the internet.

Also is there any way in which this will improve rangers?

Online Creation? Something similar. Basically you can make/test zones online on a testmud of sorts where you build it and what not.

Online Creation. It allows the areas people to create the areas in the test mud, and see them right away. No need to reboot to see the changes.

At least that is how it worked in a Circle Mud variant that I used to work on.

*bonk me*

Wow, you know I knew that? I actually built most of an area on a ROM MUD using OLC. And another two unfinished areas on SharuneMUD using it... I just completely forgot the term...

*bonk me*

So any chance this merger will improve rangers?

Homeland's OLC is a result of Vhaerun's highly-skilled heavy mods of the original Circle OLC. Very easy to work with and has lots of cool enhancements. Anyone who has built zones using anything else, will be in for a real treat if given the opportunity to use it. It makes all aspects of building zones so much easier for areas builders and lets them focus on being creative. Everyone I know who has used it has raved about how great and easy it is to use.

I have to say that the only thing I didn't like about the OLC was the lack of options you had in some ways. At the time I used it, I *think* there were only like 8 options as to how a mob attacked you which sometimes didn't fit with the mob you had in mind. The good points were you could punch out a zone in no time, fix your own mistakes as you went along without having to go through files of code, and like someone said, focus on creativity.
