Game Update Notes: 7/22/2009 [Combat Messages]

The following changes were added in the 7/20/2009 game update:

  • Overhauled melee damage messages. These messages are now two dimensional in that they try to give you an idea how strong your attack was in addition to how much it wounded the victim.
  • Converted several more zones to use the new weapon code.

New Damage Messages

The new damage messages now include an adjective describing the relative strength of your attack, in addition to describing the effect it had on the victim. A few examples:

A tough old pirate slightly wounds the brown bear with his powerful slash.
A tough old pirate badly wounds the brown bear with his mighty slash.
A tough old pirate badly wounds the brown bear with his average slash.
A tough old pirate critically wounds the brown bear with a strong slash!
The brown bear staggers from a tough old pirate's awesome slash!


This is of course a first draft, and I'm more than open to discuss changing some of the phrases around or adding more variance if it seems to be needed. Please feel free to leave questions or feedback in this thread.

Note that these new messages do not affect condensed mode in any way.

I wouldnt use the word critical/critically in any of the messages, unless they are describing an actual crit

It will be fixed in Toril 2.0.

Why waste time with these semantics? The old DIKU messages are good enough. Certainly Shev, your talents lie elsewhere.

Wherein i think its neat to get an idea of what kind of damage you're doing, it doesn't really seem to change much for me. When i first saw it, i thought it looked a lot like many other muds with their ***Eviscerates*** or **Mutilates** messages. I always liked the clean crisp sojourn messages. I think Jhorr hit the nail on the head. This is a useful change, but please use your time on other, more meaningful changes! You're a great coder, lets see the greatness!

Sorry you don't like them. I can assure you there's a point to adding them beyond what you realize at the moment.

I like them, ..brutally hurts XMob.. come on.. what's not to like! Perhaps it's a precursor to something else..

any way we can see a list of the adjectives in order of degree? it would be easier than trying to dissect them all ingame.

my opinions so far...

I am not a fan of the word 'massively'. Also kinda iffy about 'harshly'.

In general, tend toward smaller words if you can, because the lines are getting a bit longish/wordy.

It seems to depend on the point of view which order the adjectives are in?
Just a note, I dont know if it would be better another way. But probably would be better to have the mob name in between the 2 descriptors. Example:
Your massive pierce slightly wounds a crafty bugbear. (currently)
Your massive pierce leaves a crafty bugbear slightly wounded.
You slightly wound a crafty bugbear with your massive pierce.

Still brainstorming on aesthetics of these lines... hope to have more concrete ideas soon.

and btw here's a few adjectives i like:
vicious
ferocious
brutal
savage

Shrug, this is something that I was asking for years ago. As a melee combatant, it's incredibly helpful to have more information about the damage you're dealing than simply hit (barely slash) or miss.
