Over the past few weeks, something's occurred to me.
Exp can be gained and lost. Eq can be gained and lost. Fortunes can be rebuilt, and we all rely on this to help ensure that the characters we invest time in can last indefinitely.
One thing, however, can never be replaced or restored. And that is your rap sheet.
The way justice currently stands, the more times you've been judged, the harsher the sentance. Furthermore, there is no way to go back - no way to erase or mitigate a prior offense once you've been judged.
From a PLAYING perspective, why is that? Is it so that, ultimately, we will say, "out with the old, in with the new?" Is it meant to be a self-regulating thing so that when people finally slip up enough times they'll decide to play a new character?
Is it meant to be an extended vengeance feature, as in "aha, so NOW you want to redeem yourself and not kill in town? Tough luck, we don't play that way."
I'd just like to know the rationale, from a playing point of view, of making this just about the only thing you can't get back once it's lost.

inevitable char decay
I'd always heard that if you stay out of trouble for a month then you're cleared from the wanted list. Not that I'd really know, since I paid the fines the one time I killed a mob to get a dagger back for a player and the one time I was grouped with Kaln on one of his quakefests which got me tossed into the slammer. Gee, I haven't had any problems with justice outside of that.
Damn you Kaln, my mama warned me to stay away from guys like you.

I think it does get cleared. I used to kill and get taken to jail by RDF's and escape tons, now I don't do it hardly ever yet I got hauled off this morning and only got a 75 plat fine. So it must have been erased at some point.

I've never seen it do that, but if this has been changed, I'll happily admit my error.

I don't see how having that number go up represents a 'decay' of the character?

It's simple - as that number goes up, justice gets harsher. It's not something you can change.

OK. But I was asking not about charges, which I know are dropped after a while, but Times Judged. Which, as I understand it, controls how harsh your penalty is, and never goes down.
Thanks for your responses, folks!
