Coop Story: Untitled

Postby Chandigar2 » Tue Mar 04, 2003 7:14 pm

Note: This started off on our guild BBS but due to lack of interest, I thought I'd move it here!

Basically, we're gonna write a story. Write as much or as little as you want, continuing the plot from the previous story. No rules really, just keep it 'serious' (ie don't throw in vomiting monkeys dancing in a circle unless it really is a part of the story you're writing!)

I'll get the ball rolling, consider this the intro part of most stories which sets the theme, after which characters are introduced. I'll leave it up to the first poster to get the main plot going and introduce characters and storyline This sets the main background only, feel free to change the location/time/etc of the story as you see fit.

--------------------------------------------------------------

A chill wind swept off of the mountain, unseasonably cold for this time of the year. The breeze flowed down into the warm valley, causing odd wind patterns and unusual updrafts, chasing the scattered clouds across the face of the full moon. This mattered little to the wizard, however, flying high above the ground and surveying the land with a critical eye. Warded with magic and protected with powerful enchantments, he swooped gracefully above the trees, nearly a hundred feet in the air. To his enhanced vision, the forest below appeared lit as bright as day, yet tinged with the blue light of the moon. He knew not what he searched for, but the urge to find the source was as inescapable as it was irresistible. It came on suddenly the night before, an almost tangible fluctuation in the magical weave. For one attuned to the ebb and flow of magic as he was, the fluctuation was almost a physical slap.

Very faintly, he heard it, the faint and faraway sound of tribal rhythmic drumming throbbed in the darkness. Turning gracefully, he headed towards the sound of the drums, as out of place in these northern woods as a herd of deer in the jungles of Chult. Finally he saw it, something that was unmistakably alien in this forest of pine and scrub. Rising from a shallow dip in the undulating treetops, a dark and mysterious grove sprang, its trees heavy with thick branches and black leaves, ropy vines entwined among the boughs. Veering slightly, the wizard circled the grove, giving it a wide berth. From his vantage point, very little could be made out within the grove except for the occasional brief glimpse of violet light, mostly obscured by the trees.

The tribal drumming filled his ears and his head, driving thoughts of safety from his mind. Turning slightly, he angled towards the grove, passing closer and now able to make out the strange vegetation in detail. The trees of the grove were squat and extremely thick, a strange and almost scaly pattern to the bark. Although darkly discolored, each tree seemed to glisten with a malevolent aura, the poisonous leaves serrated and the branches barbed. The vines trailed over everything, a thick carpet running out of the grove into the neighboring forest, the thick tendrils slowly choking the life from the nearby woods. Strange flickering movements could be seen in the center, almost as if from a fire of flickering violet flames.

Cursing the penetrating and maddening sounds of the drums, the wizard threw caution to the wind and flew towards the grove, determined to unravel the mystery. Suddenly, with movement so unnaturally fast yet fluid, the black trees seemed to bend backwards, the branches revealing a sight so surprising and fascinating that the wizard froze in midair for a moment.

To those careful observers that happened to be near the edge of the forest at the time, a sight reeking of magic and the supernatural caught their attention and provided fuel for stories of witches and magic to be told around the hearth for weeks to come. The night sky was suddenly pierced by a bolt of violet, seemingly coming from one of the deepest parts of the forest, striking a single figure floating in the air which then dropped quickly out of sight.

The noise wreaked havoc deep within the wizard’s head, thoughts quickly gathered and faded before he was able to justify and focus upon them. A blinding beam forced his eyes to quickly shut tightly upon his aged face. Realizing all his spells were useless, struggling against a more powerful energy, the wizard grew weak of straining to move, it was useless.

The drums grew even more louder and penetrating, the aching of his mind made him even weaker then the struggle to move. Suddenly the drums were no more, the wizard was flooded with all the eluded thoughts of the previous moments but held motionless. Even without opening his eyes, he could feel the softening of the beam, a gentle release of the energy that bound him still, but yet he didn’t move, flinch, or even dare to breathe.

A gentle breeze blew across his wrinkled cheek, chills traveled down his curved aged spine, as he felt the touch of a finger on the nap of his neck. "Do not be frightened old man" he heard, a woman’s raspy voice, enticing but strong he thought. "What brings you my way, do tell”, she whispered close to his ear. The wizard felt the sensations of danger and a deep comfort, his thoughts ran wild in trying to answer, his mouth dry and parched, he found himself unable to speak, merely nodding and looking ahead of him and noticing the groves deep darkness feeling totally alone, but yet feeling completely surrounded. Closing his eyes, his heart raced, as he noticed the sounds of the drums starting to softly beat into a growing rage of sound.

As the wizard slowly tried to rise to his feet, he felt a steel embrace grasping his arms. He didnt even try to struggle when his hands were twisted behind his back.

'Very wise of you human, dont try to fight' he heard a woman's voice say.

The mage glanced around trying to indentify to whom the voice belonged. In the soft moonlight bathing the grove he could hardly see anything more than shapes and shadows but with the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse, an outline of a slender darkskined figure with white hair relfecting the soft glow of stars and moon.

Fiure's robes shimmered slightly as she turned around toward somebody hidden in the darkenss,

'Uk orn xun al' the woman's voice suddnely lost all it's raspiness and sounded almost melodious, yet he sensed a danger in that melody.
The mage didn't hear the answer instead it poured into his brain making him feel naked and defensless.

'Yes, he will do it for us. Start the chants'. The beats of drums grew faster and louder as the grove filled with shapes. Yet another pair of hands grabbed the mage's head, pulling it backward and forcing his jaw open. The woman approached him slowly with a clay bowl and poured slimy thick goo right in his mouth.

'Do not be frightened old man' she repeated with her raspy voice again yet to the contrary of her words his reaction was very close to panic. The woman threw back her head and cackled, having seen the terror in his eyes. The wizard's thoughts became confused and he dropped to his knees as the hands holding holing him let him loose. With what little consciousness he had left, he felt his control over his body slipping. All of the sudden the grove became very quiet; not a single drum or whisper could be heard; just the wind softly rustled the leaves.

'A z'ress ultrine orbb! Quarval-sharess' The woman invoked 'Udos zhal har'luth!'

Suddenly the grove errupted in a new wave of fury of drums. The drow pristess grined evily as she saw the mage rising to his to his feet ...

The drow pristess moved across yet again silent grove picked the fish and placed it a prepared bucket of water.

As the beating for drum stopped the mage slowly regained his senses. He swam in circles for a while trying to find a way out but the only apparent one was up in the direction of the flickering reflections of the moon, out into the deadly air.

Suddenly the reflecions of moon grew dimmer and he saw a horrid tentacled face holding its head above the surface of water. Yet again he sensed a projection forcing into his mind, streaming images and words into his defensless head,

'Sahuagian......prince.....overthrow.....father.....assassin....alliance ....26th Flamerule......Calimport......attack'

'He is ready to take the message, silly surface dwelller, let him into the ocean' and with that the mass-projection was completed.

Kuamin Al'beb slouched at his post, high above the city of Calimport. It felt like he had been standing guard for almost a dozen hours, but he knew by the position of the moon that he was only in the second hour of his watch. His revelry the night before cost his constitution dearly, but he would easily have traded a month of night watch duty for another night in the sweet arms of Jellinna.

Shaking off his fond memories, Kuamin once again scanned the sleeping city below. From his vantage point, he could see the many flickering torches lining the streets and buildings of Calimport, each one casting a pool of light in the dark evening streets of the city. The light of the moon created glassy silver streaks in the calm water of the port, the large ships bobbing peacefully in the waves. He used to love watching the ships in port, ships from all over the realm sailing to this great city to trade and barter their good. The delicate elven ships that sliced through the water with almost nary a wake, the sturdy human vessels of wood and iron, even the occasional tinker gnome monstrosity pulling into dock and causing the fishermen to curse them for scaring away the fish. All these and more he used to watch with the innocent eyes of a child.

Of course, when he was a child, the drow and sahuagin were naught but nightime stories told to children to scare them into being good. These days, every child knows to fear the war cries of the drow, and the terror of a dark face in the night, framed with white hair. Every child knows better than to swim at the beach after sundown, and all have seen the grisly remains at daybreak. Once a bastion of safety and security in the south, the defenses of Calimport have been slowly eroding under the constant raiding by these two ancient enemies of man. Even the good natured halflings have abandoned their city of Luiren, relocating everyone to the relatively safety of the north.

There have been rumors mentioned hushed voices of missing sailors and fishermen, their empty ships returning to port filled with blood and sometimes worse. Shepherds which once tended their flocks in the desert, roaming from oasis to oasis have gone missing, their herds vanished or found slaughtered and rotting in the heat. The people mutter about the Pasha, asking why an army isn't being formed to take back the lands around Calimport, but these arguments are only made in half hearted efforts, most already knowing that his beloved Yasmine was kidnapped many moons before. Kuamin sighed as these thoughts passed through his mind, adding another layer of tension to his troubled thoughts.

Very faintly, he heard a disturbing noise carried upon the wind, almost of a struggle. The sound got louder all of a sudden, and as he spun around in his perch, he saw a quick flash of light and a burst of flame coming from the upper level of the wizard's tower. Kuamin cursed, assuming it was probably just another experiment gone awry, and turned back around, missing the sight of a dark robed figure slowly crumpling and falling out a tower window to the ground below.

Staring out at the empty ocean, Kuamin continued to let his mind wander, of course most often wandering back to the seductive curves of Jellinna but sometimes too to the greater problems plaguing the city.

Hours passed upon his lookout tower. Kuamin felt the ale from the evening just before his watch weigh heavily in both his thoughts and his bladder, making him drowsy and listless. Gazing hypnotically at the waves, he felt himself almost falling asleep when something suddenly made him bolt upright and lean over the railing, hoping for a better look. The waves near the docks, usually slowly undulating in the moonlight, began to churn and froth, as a group of strange figures emerged from the inky depths. Dripping with water, they creature stood stooped by the base of one of the docks, hidden in the shadows. Kuamin peered down at the group, trying to decide whether to raise the alarm, when suddenly one of them stepped out of the shadow. Its hunched back and scaly skin was like something out of a nightmare, an enormous mouth filled with sharp teeth grinned in the moonlight. Kuamin was only stunned for an instant, but an instant was all the time the creature needed as it raised its arm and fired a tiny crossbow towards him, plunging deep into his shoulder just blow the collarbone.

As the powerful paralyzing poison seeped into his bloodstream, Kuamin looked on with horror as the sahuagin slipped on strange cloaks and one by one vanished from sight.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------

What happens next? What was the figure that fell out of the window? Does Zog have a part to play in all this? Why did the halflings leave? Will Kuamin survive and become a hero? Or perhaps even Jellina? How did the Sahuagin get drow Pwifwafi's? What kind of strange tribal magic have the drow involved themselves in? Or are they merely pawns to some other force as well?
