India's booming software industry, which is increasingly doing work for U.S. companies, could surpass the United States in software and tech service jobs by 2010

more than 500,000 technology jobs were lost between mid-2001 and mid-2003

Throughout all U.S. companies, Forrester Research (nasdaq: FORR - news - people ) predicts the loss of roughly 3.3 million jobs by 2015.

and the point is made, no presidential candidate has yet mentioned or acknowledged this or proposed anything to do about it

Foreign outsourcing and manufacturing lower production costs in the form of wages that must be paid (American wages vs. foreign wages), and thus reduces final cost of product. Yes, it kills American jobs, but, yes, it lowers end price. You have to decide whether you want to pay rock-bottom price (foreign wages and manufacturing costs) or pay top-dollar price (American wages and manufacturing costs).

kurtok, the 15 dollars i saved on my processor - you can keep it. i want my job back. i fail to grasp how this reasoning counters the argument.

sure - 60 million people save 10 dollars a year, and 2 million people lose their jobs.

now, which political affiliation thinks that these are good numbers?

hey guess what? why dont you go flame somebody else, huh? im not bitching about a damn thing. i posted this shit informatively - it has nothing to do with any nationalities, it has to deal with outsourcing and losing jobs inside our nation - i dont care if they go to canada - they leave here.

i have not bitched about this, i might have said it sucks, but im not even making a personal threat. personally, i have loved getting laid off. i spent a few weeks in florida, a month in paris, i have trips to vietnam, italy, paris, england, and barcelona lined up - im happy. why are YOU here supposing about my happiness anyway? if you dont have anything constructive, insightful, observational, or critical to say - maybe you should return to your slashdot buddies, im sure something there misses you.

Tech jobs died because the technology the need for techies ceased. There was a point when being MCSE made you necessary to big corporations and technology firms, but the point passed. Everyone that needed their network hooked up, got it hooked up. A lot of the people that hired people to do their "IT" work, eventually figured everything out for themselves and fired the unnecessary techies. It's not rocket science. The jig was up, and everyone found out that it is not, in fact, difficult to operate a computer. When that happened, the necessity for a specialist died, and with it a bunch of jobs. If they don't come back, it's time to find a new career path. Sucks, but we can't all be what we want.

you know ensis, that statement just shows us that you must use a gameboy for your networking needs.

isn't it amazing that those two little boxes talk to each other and make happy beeps when you hit a button?

of COURSE the reason the tech jobs are gone is because people know it all now, thats it. uh huh.

go back to talking about things with words you understand.

my original post was mostly a flame, but the real point was you have to be competitive.

Lots of programming type tech jobs shipped overseas because american labor force didn't have the necessary supply which drove up the cost of labor and in gave a lot of talented people leverage which they applied rigorously like demanding 20 and 30k signing bonuses, wearing flip flops and shorts to work, and driving nicer cars than the senior VPs. You had to have known that couldn't last.

American wealth and dominance is not based on you having a job. Its based on intellectual property and being everywhere first (and acquiring the rights). What is high tech today is not high tech of the future, your MCSE not gonna carry you 30 years into the future. Think about how many high tech industries of the past are outsourced overseas now. Railroad was a tech stock, maybe you should go to work laying track?

And lets be real, networking and computing is not hard. Networking and computing with Windows 95/98/NT was ridiculously painful, but improvement in the most popular OS have eliminated a lot of tech jobs. Blame Microsoft for making incremental improvements in their flagship software. I'm still astounded by people who can't take a CD and install a program, but I have a whole office full of computerphobes.... that will not last either.

The place where there will tech jobs in the US for a lot longer is interoperability between Applications (database systems). Its a lot harder to outsource that kind of work since most of your problems are local offices with local offices or applications in those offices with each other.

Seems like i remember you talking about how you were worth a lot more than your company thought you were and shoul be paying you more and so on and so on and so on... The thing is no matter how talented you are and how much the company is going to lose when you leave, they will fire you in a heartbeat just to get rid of your attitude. Companies aren't about all stars, they are about working together with people to achieve goals. All stars aren't worth the drama (cept in sales).

anyhow im feeling like the old kiryan, so i guess i better take a break from the boards again.

I think it's amazing that you post some obscure website every day or so and when people don't agree you have something shitty to say about everyones response. Would you feel better if I cried with you that technology jobs deserve to stay here? that you were robbed of your manhood by "the man"? Maybe if you bitch about it enough Bushie will find a job for you.

I posted an opinion on why the tech jobs left, since it didn't fit your sinister "government must pay!" conspiracy theory you responded with something about gameboy? :)

You are right Daz. You are so right that I can only envy your righteousness :)

Just out of curiosity, what was the job you lost to overseas? and what were your qualifications that you deserved the job over said overseas outsource?

The capitalistic coroporations'. That's which political affiliation thinks so. If you disagree with supply and demand, then you start petitioning your version of altruism to corporate America and see if it takes hold.
Basically what was stated in the links I posted, most people that have responded to this post have affirmed. And you know why? Because it has validity. Another principle that people have stated here: survival of the fittest. If you are going to dwindle in the past instead of adapt to the present and the future, then you'll be no more valuable than Windows 3.11. To tell ya the truth, I, and probably the majority of people, couldn't care less if you do.
