Days of Rage
Days of Rage
As you all know !id is the bane of all that is
wholesome in this sweet world.
So I propose Days of Rage.
Starting this month, and every month
on the 2nd tuesday of the month,
You will log on and petition these words:
"Thank you very for this mud, it is a joy to
all, but in protest of your sinister plot
to suck some of that joy out by refusing to
remove !id, I shall not play today."
Then you log off.

That's kind of like voluntarily sleeping on a lumpy, uncomfortable couch that smells like butt and wet dog because your wife cooked something you didn't like for dinner, isn't it?
Gormal tells you 'im a dwarven onion'
Gormal tells you 'always another beer-soaked layer'
Inama ASSOC:: 'though it may suit your fantasies to think so, i don't need oil for anything.'
Haley: Filthy lucre? I wash that lucre every day until it SHINES!

Oh I have an idea!!!
Hey Coders.. lets make ID on the mud JUST LIKE ID in AD&D!!!
For those who don't play D&D, each ID requires a pearl valuing 100g. With components in the game, it would be nothing to add pearls to the Enchanter spell list. Oh and be sure to charge at least 1.5 times the amount for scrolls! Think of it!!! Somewhere to spend all that plat everyone mutters that people have collecting dust. (Of course Ashiwi, I don't mean you, we all know you polish yours. :-))
Oh yeah,, lets not forget to make sure there's only maybe 5 pearls to be purchased every 72 hours. Oh and definately limit the ID scrolls too.
Then we can remove the !ID flag! Think of the money an enchanter could make IDing stuff for people!! Charge 130 per cast, and you still come out 20 plats ahead instead of buying scrolls,, oh and ench would make 30 p every casting.
What would people do to get around this? Try the item on. Gee.. isn't that what people do for !ID items now?
Find something else to complain about.. this one is silly.

You group-say 'my chars will carry the component on them if I can.'

Don't get me wrong Alabas, I don't have much of a shiny pile myself.
Now, the whole Auction swiping money cus its !id, that's a different story. Would it be possible perhaps to add an asteriks next to items that are !ID? Or perhaps make it so you can't auction !ID items? Or maybe when the item goes up a separate little message says This item cannot be identifed?

I like !ID on some things, adds a bit of mystery, especially when the item description hints at something special it might do! :)
I dislike the auctioneer taking my cash when he can't ID something I have paid to ID.

From an area writers perspective, !ID can be a useful tool on some items including weapons and instruments. Not all magical enchantments can be identified by a fairly simple spell if they can even be identified at all.
If you think an item shouldn't be !ID, feel free to mmail areas and list what the item name is and perhaps a reason you think it shouldn't be !ID and we'll review it and change it as necessary.

It would kind of be like having an item with a called proc and no clue as to the procs existance.
Like Dagger of Oblivion :P
Personally !id doesnt bother me too much, but there definatly are cases where I really wonder what the point of the item being !id is.
I also think Bard Lore should be able to descern at least some information on an item that is !id. The concept of lore is that the bards well-traveled lifestyle gives them a worldly knowledge of magical items. You would think lore would allow them to gain some insights on an item that an identify spell might not be able to provide. If this only worked on instruments would also allow bards to learn what their instrument does while still keeping some of the mystique !id can have.

would take too long to mudmail, how about all items that can be figured out by wearing and removing them and having detect magic up.

Do you really want 1000 email's saying
Hey dude my dagger shaped like a fang is !id
And I think it should be Idable because if I were
a real rogue Id be able to know what my dagger
could do cause I would have been sleeping with it
under my pillow for years.
The arguement that some items are !id
because of some special magic or some
special reason the area maker has in mind
for them, falls apart when you see that
almost all Very special items, (tia items)
and the like are not !id.
I can see in some very rare, part of a quest
type situation where an item would be
!id, but common weapons, common bits of
armor I don't see it at all.
Wouldn't it make more sense, that special
items and I do mean special, are harder to id
not !id. Whereas you would have to make use
of some gnome tinker, to id your extremely
special rare case no other option but this very
unique thingy.
But a dagger shaped like a fang is !id,
I don't know if it floats, I don't know what
it's damage dice are, All i know is it has +2 dam.
Is this some special item? Does it have a secret
sayble process? If i wield it long enuf will it become
part of me and never fumble ? Is it that special ?

Now I would liek to address the you can wear it and
get a detect magic scroll and see what it does arguement.
Well I guess it follows that if my character actually cant wear it
or wield it, he dont know why. So lets say hes a duergar rogue
he cant wear this piece of armor. I guess the logical thing to do is
pass it around to various other evil race classes can see it they can wear it
then if that dont work i gues he should pass it around to all hes goodie
friends and see if they can wear it, hoping all along that these
other chars arent at 100 in some stat so that he can find out
what stat it raises?
Or maybe hes not so popular or a type of shy person, i guess the locicall thing for him to do would be to make all possi9ble combination of low level chars and classes and races to see wha the stats are on some
!id item.
Seems a little wierd to me but if thats the solution i guess the mud
can afford all those low level chars being made for the express purpose of iding ! id items

i would agree that !id on instruments is kinda lame (especially as any decent bard should be able to glean some knowledge of the instrument thru looking, touching and playing it), but as for !id weapons....
If you *really* care that much, go to the arena with a friend and log it all as you whack on him/her. A few arena kills like this wont tell you the exact dice (which is SO !RP anyhow) but you will be able to tell if it does more or less damage on ave than some other weapon. As it is, melee is such a joke anyhow its not even worth bothering.
My troll likes the biggest bloodiest *looking* sword/club/bodypart he can find...tho on occasion he is confused and seduced by 'shiny things'.
As for !id items...i think they are mildly annoying in small zones, but so is half of life anyhow. For larger items or mysterious pieces, i think they add lots of intrigue as well as good possibities for devious areas writers. I especially like the idea of invisible stats (ie luck/karma) and hope very much they are still in the game. Secret wisdom is power =)
