And speaking of other news-worthy items...

"Metallica may be a cool name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to convince officials it is also suitable for a baby girl."

Awesome.

Having said all that, the situation has been handled, so this thread is pretty much at an end. -Kossuth

Please tell me that this became an issue because someone got anal about copyright laws, and that the Sweedish government doesn't have to approve the name of every child born to its citizens.

Lol, while I kinda agree with your annoyance here, I think people that name their kids shit like "metallica" should be shot on site anyway; so, either way, I don't care as long as that kid doesn't have to suffer through life with a jack-ass name like Metallica.

The danish state has to approve all names given here. I assume it is the same in Sweden.

It gives a very few problems with foreigners. E.g. Morgan is an approved boys name, but not a girls name, so those that wish to have a girl morgan need to convince the state that it is a female name.

I know its a choice what to name your child, but I do wish we had something like that here .. some of the names I have seen are sooooo crazy .. people throw letters together and call it a name .. much like old school name acceptance!! Just keep adding letters til it gets approved!

I'm sorry, but parents should be allowed to raise their children however they want. Even if we disagree with their methods (unless its abusive of course), its important that people be allowed their freedom.

American names are the best!

Funny though, naming a kid after a band. See, here in the states we don't name kids after bands, the bands name kids after things. Names like 'Blanket' or 'Moon Unit' rock.

I met a guy once who's legal name was Seymour Butts, he didn't seem to really care and seemed quite proud of it.

Heh diso, if you are a foreigner you can call your kid almost anything and they don't really care. Especially if you are non-european/non-american.

But yeah, Norway and Sweden have the same rules. Not sure about Finland, and in Iceland I don't think anybody gives a f*ck, not that it matters cuz frickin everybody has the same ten names anyhow, except for bjork.

I really don't care what anyone says (okay, that's not true, I do care because they get in the way of my realization of Utopia, but whatever), the way some European countries really think outside the box and are willing to try new things and see how they fly should be commended. I'm nto saying all of their ideas are good, but it shows a willingness to go out on a limb that is rather refreshing, and oftentimes beneficial to the world at large.

Bah. Put a warning on those things if they're not okay for most work environments!
