Windows Vista

Postby Gormal » Mon Mar 24, 2008 8:25 am

Okay, so I have this crappy OS and its giving me trouble. The entire zMUD folder is flagged as read-only and when I change the properties, it prompts me for admin approval which I give. The computer has a working bar, then finishes and the changed simply don't apply. I think it might be the Program Files folder and some kind stupid protection that Vista has built in.

This is just a random guess, but are you running with the admin account? If not, it might not let you change the permissions...

I'm an administrator, I also changed the settings to allow all for all types of accounts and it still has everything pretty much everywhere read-only. I dunno, I'm gonna play around a bit more but its pissing me off hardcore.

Only thing I can suggest is turn of the user access control crap. Not sure if you've done it yet or not. I've used vista since release and just grown accustomed to it I guess.

This is what my dad chose to do, and has benefitted him mightily.

Is actually an option if you have all the appropriate WinXP drivers, discs & Product Keys etc.

Personally, I'll be putting off loading/using Vista on my own PC(s) for quite some time, hopefully a few years at least yet.

Yeah, pretty much waiting on Vista until I build a new PC. Presumably brand new components will have appropriate drivers by then...

You place a lot more faith in Mafiasoft than I do....

If you don't have an XP cd, you could always just run an Ubuntu live CD. Live CD's are the best damn thing ever invented in terms of OS and security.

You realize Microsoft isn't the company who writes drivers, right?

Yes, but you do realize that they're the ones who released an OS with almost as many issues as ME?

While you are using an administrator account, you may still want to add permissions for your account on the folder. It's possible if they were imported or some other silly thing happened, that your administrator rights allowed you to remove your own permission to alter the files?

Not a diagnostic, but it would be a fun thing to check.

Yeah, Vista copied a lot of the same features as Server 2003, wherein you have to explicitly give permissions even to administrators. It's a good thing to have, unfortunately I think the concept is a bit over the heads of most at-home Vista users.

Hope their solution worked out for you.

By the way, I used a combination of every suggestion that didn't involve installing XP and it works now. The way permissions are handled really annoys be, but at least I understand how it works now. Thanks!
