Admonition

Postby sotana » Sat Mar 15, 2008 3:59 am

This story is so very overdue (both in RL time and in mud-time). In mud time, this encounter fits in not too long after Sotana says goodbye to Lilira who sails away and chronicles her journey in this thread. Before Lilira left, she made a statement that was the main impetus for the following story.

In RL time, well, we're just glad we're finally getting the posting rolling :-P. You'll see as the story unfolds over the next little while that this is a collaborative effort, probably bigger than either of us intended when we first started talking about it but well worth it (for us anyway!). Enjoy!

The early morning air was bitingly cold, the dark sky dimly illumined by the chill light of a setting moon. A lone kestrel flew swiftly northward.

Miles of scenery rolled on far beneath the bird...flat, empty plains giving way to gently rolling hills dotted with trees...then more trees...then more...until they filled the landscape, their great mass unbroken save for a thin, pale stretch of road winding from north to south.

The bird slowed, her path curving in a deliberate spiral, skimming the treetops. Only shadows moved in the forest below, silent and disembodied. Still she circled, as seconds passed and grew into minutes. And then she saw it: deep in the trees, a flash of white that disappeared as quickly as it had come, too dim to be visible to the human eye but brilliantly obvious to the kestrel's adapted vision. For several long moments the bird seemed to hang in the air, balanced on the updraft. Again the flash. Abruptly she wheeled lower, tucking her wings to drop heavily through the boughs of the enormous oaks, past the stunted pines and the spindly undergrowth to the forest floor, landing deftly in the blanket of pine needles. In a breath, the druid shrugged off her avian form. It had served its purpose well but she had a different need now. She lifted her face, swiftly gauging the hour in the first weak rays of sunrise even as she assumed a new form. Not long until her quarry would go to ground, waiting for sunset. It was time to hunt.

His scent was sharp and clear, filling her senses, generating a flash of angry exultation that sent the blood pulsing hotly through her veins in a fresh rush of energy. He was close but moving fast. With a low snarl, the black panther surged forward, little more than a shadow as she noiselessly wove her way among the crowded tree trunks. The forest was eerily still, its awakening inhabitants huddled in their lairs, sensing the death that slipped through their home in silence. Closer now. Past a slow trickle of muddy water. Closer still. Through a small clearing. There. A narrow opening in the earth. A larger cave, darkness beyond.

His scent was so strong. Warm. Sweet. It swam through her brain, sharpening the big cat's vision as she slunk across the cave floor, her belly close to the ground. And there he was. The drow, his back to her. No trace now of the pale hair she had glimpsed from her aerial vantage point, the strand or two that had escaped his hood to betray his location.

It had been long since she had last answered the call to hunt and even longer since the prey had been other than animal. After weeks of tireless tracking, she answered the call with savage satisfaction as rage, hatred screamed through her head, smothering the tiny spark of humanity that might hold her in check. Muscles bunched beneath her jet black coat, then released smoothly as she sprang at the drow with the full force of her weight, claws extended to tear his flesh, powerful jaws spread wide, poised to snap his fragile neck, animal instincts fueled by human passions.

Nilan felt the weight slam into him from behind, driving him toward the ground in an instant. The drow managed to twist his body seconds before impact, a move that no doubt spared him from taking the full brunt of the blow. Still, it forced the breath from his lungs as he continued his roll. Gasping, the assassin caught a glimpse of the huge cat-like beast that had attacked him as it tumbled free of his twisting form. Nilan shrugged free of the cloak that threatened to entangle him and, coming full circle, regained his footing. Instinctively the drow muttered a word that caused an outline of magical purple faerie fire to dance over the panther's sleek fur. The assassin took a step back, steadying himself and reaching for a line of throwing daggers that were fastened expertly to the front of his leather armor. Grimacing, Nilan tugged the blades free and, in rapid succession, let them fly towards his target. Each throw brought a groan of pain and, for the first time, the drow knew that he had not escaped the claws of the beast that had pounced on him. His left shoulder throbbed and he became consciously aware of the warm sticky feeling that was running down his back. Swearing, Nilan let the last blade fly free, before drawing "Shadow" in his right hand and the cursed stiletto in his left. The sentient blade seemed to come alive as its thirst for blood was awakened at the sound and feel of battle. Nilan could hear the divine blade whisper to him, urging him to make the kill. It yearned to taste blood and pierce the heart of the purple emblazed target the assassin now had within his sights.

Blood. Hers. Dark gashes along her flank and shoulder. Dimly registered but inconsequential. His. She could feel it on her claws. Wet, sticky. She could smell it on the man. Warm, coppery. She meant to spill more soon enough, taste it. Excitement, adrenalin bubbled through her veins in response. The big cat crouched low as she circled slowly, tail lashing in frustration, anticipation.

Nilan moved toward the panther, "Shadow" leading with a low thrust that immediately twisted upward in a slash the drow hoped would confuse his opponent. The sentient blade seemed to glow eerily, and Nilan felt the divine blade vibrate in his grip. Something was not right. Never before had "Shadow" reacted with such intensity to a mere beast. Nilan groaned, his left arm held close in toward his side to alleviate the strain that pulled on his already torn and punctured shoulder. This beast was something more….Nilan winced as he moved closer to his target. "Shadow" sensed something more than a panther, it sensed an enemy of Vhaeraun.

The man's blade glittered even in the darkness of the cave, the details of the scene sharply defined to the nocturnal hunter's eyesight. Her body stilled, tensed as the drow approached. Only her tail moved, twitching back and forth, marking her feral patience. Back and forth. Waiting. She had missed her first chance. Misjudged his agility in the hot grip of her fury. Instinct held her motionless now as her pulse thrummed in her ears, pounded behind her eyes. Waiting. He grew closer. Involuntarily, her lip curled back from her teeth. Anger rumbled, vibrating deep in her chest. This encounter was long overdue. The right moment would come. Waiting...

The drow approached slowly, keeping some distance between the huge beast and himself. "Shadow's" reaction was not typical. The assassin contemplated this as his eyes centered on the target in front of him. "What are you?", Nilan growled angrily. His teeth clenched as the pain in his shoulder intensified. The drow re-adjusted his grip on the stiletto. The blade's hilt was now becoming slick with his own blood that slowly trickled down his arm. Cursing, Nilan glared at the panther. "Shadow" vibrated eerily in his hand and whispers filled his mind. 'Bide your time, Hand of Vhaeraun. Let our enemy come to us. Taste its blood. Can you feel it? Can you feel me?'.

Nilan stopped, his eyes narrowed and coldly focused on his target. Glaring, he triggered a small catch on the hilt of the stiletto. Dark sticky goo coated the blade and the drow smiled. "You want me, cat, or whatever you are?" he spat. "Come get me. Let’s dance!" With that the assassin confidently held his position, the sentient blade pulsing in his grip.

Some quiet, isolated part of the cat registered satisfaction at the drow's angry confusion. She savored his emotions, letting the heat of them wash over her, cool her own frustration. He had stopped not two lengths away. He was biding his time. He wanted to play. She poised, calculating carefully. Waiting. Watching. The right moment. Awareness rippled along her skin, tickled her nose, hummed in her ears. She could feel his every breath down to the pads of her paws, each inhalation, each exhalation. The poison on his dagger burned acrid and strange in her nostrils, creating a stench that was easy to track. Waiting. Watching. The right moment.... Now! Gathering herself, she lunged, covering the short distance to the man in one fluid motion, jaws snapping viciously toward his head.

Nilan grinned, lunging forward at the same moment as the huge cat. Narrowing the distance twice as fast, the assassin hoped to limit the range and, more importantly, the number of the panther's attacks. “Shadow” led the way, wickedly poised to cut into anything it came in contact with, be it fur, flesh or bone. The drow dipped low into a roll beneath the pouncing panther, his poisoned stiletto slashing at the beast's underbelly.

The drow was a blur of sudden motion springing to meet the cat's attack, and her feline senses broke down each movement, captured moments in time. The scrape of soft soles against the rocky ground, propelling the man forward in his lunge. Warning her of his intentions. The brief view of an ebon hand clenched around the dagger hilt, leading the charge. That caustic odor following the other dagger, marked in her brain. Vital to avoid. Dust rising around the wiry form now tucking, diving beneath, almost past her. Over and through it all the metallic bite of fresh blood. His rush had thrown off her timing. Too late now for the crippling blow her feint had been intended to achieve. But perhaps still enough time to dispatch one threat.

With a lithe movement, the animal twisted in mid-air, moving her exposed belly away from the poisoned blade while simultaneously swinging her broad chest back toward the drow, taking advantage of his proximity to swipe one paw across that arm, claws fully extended. Primitive excitement jolted along her nerves as she felt flesh tear, smelled new blood. Then a flash at the edge of her vision as the man tucked into his roll, continued past. Burning pain! Careless. Stupid.

Breath forced from his lungs, Nilan landed awkwardly, careful to keep his vitals away from raking claws and snapping teeth. He rolled away, staggering to his feet, cursing.

The cat stumbled in her landing and fell back with a hiss, rasping her tongue across the dark blood slowly oozing from a long, white weal along the inside of one leg. Such a shallow wound. The clean blade had barely scored the skin. But for that instant's contact, pain...something seeming to tear at her very life, stronger than any poison.

Nilan grimaced and pain coursed through his forearm as his fingers tightened their hold on the poisoned stiletto. He felt a surge throughout his body, bringing some relief to his myriad of scratches and open wounds. The drow knew that “Shadow” had found its mark. The blade had many powers, and life stealing was not the only one, though it had served the assassin in many a battle, drawing the life force of the victim into him, bringing soothing relief to injuries he sustained from the contest. Now, Nilan called upon another ability inherent to his people, the power of levitation. Muttering a word, the assassin began to float upward effortlessly into the air, away from any future swipes the mysterious cat-beast might attempt.

The drow was moving again. Not just away but upward. Cursed drow magic! The panther shook her head to clear it, refocus, her violent anger sparked anew at his tricks. No time for weakness! Strike while the man was winded, before he was out of reach! One final flick of her tongue across the wound and she surged forward again. A quick stride to marshall power, then she gathered herself and sprang, powerful hind legs propelling her away from the ground, toward the hated form even now gliding further away into the upmost limits of their stone shelter.

Nilan tensed in preparation, his daggers poised as he realized the big cat's intent. He tightened his grip on both blades though his mind focused on “Shadow”. The sentient blade pulsed in his hand almost as if it anticipated tasting flesh once again. Then he was jerked out of midair, tumbling forward on top of the animal, falling quickly toward the ground. Grimacing, he felt sharp claws bite through the leather of his boot where the cat had snagged him, pulling him down.

Time seemed to slow as the big cat fell, her body entangled with the drow's, aware of his every muscle straining to rebalance, respond. Instinct drove her now, fear of the curious knife that burned to bone and beyond. She twisted desperately away from the arm holding that blade, somersaulting awkwardly through the air and landing hard on her hind legs.

Rather than fight his descent, the assassin used both the momentum and his position atop the cat to his advantage as he neared the ground. Shifting “Shadow” in his grip, the drow plunged it toward the huge beast's exposed back while his legs kicked and twisted in an attempt to right himself.

The sudden weight was too much and the panther's body betrayed her as one back leg, weakened by the long gashes along her flank from the assassin's throwing daggers and further strained in her fierce leap, buckled underneath her. With sickening abruptness, time resumed its normal, blurring speed as the panther fell heavily, off-balance, unable to fully avoid the drow's thrust. And the dagger found a home, sliding deep into the junction of back and shoulder.

Nilan felt a surge course though his body and he knew the blade had found its target. Deep wounds began to heal somewhat, even as the assassin continued his roll, tearing the dagger free. He regained his balance and footing, bringing the deadly blade before him in a defensive crouch.

The big cat screamed a high-pitched woman's scream as she felt the enchanted dagger rip at her human soul, wrenching the druid half out of her animal form. With a sob she screamed again, but this time her voice formed words, ragged and pain-filled but powerful, one hand coming up to grip the holy symbol at her neck, the other dangling useless at her side. In an instant, blinding, brilliant light crackled into life, filling the room.

Nilan groaned, pulling his forearm up to shield his eyes as he turned away from the ball of bright glare. Staggering, the drow cursed as he became disoriented. The magical light burned like fire to his sensitive eyes which began to tear up even as he closed them shut. Muttering a word, the assassin called upon drow magic, instantly bringing up a globe of darkness. Its effect plunged the entire area around the two combatants into impenetrable blackness.

Feral hunting instincts shrieked against the blanketing dark that hid her prey from her inadequate human senses. Then rational thought warred with instinctual response and she welcomed the relief brought by the thick blackness. She was as invisible to him as he was to her. But not for long. Never for long.

Slowly, painfully, she forced her confused brain to comprehend her abrupt almost-transformation, to complete the involuntary shapechange begun by the dagger's magic. All senses focused on the sharp outlines of the holy symbol biting into her clenched fingers as she called to mind the details of her non-animal form with all of its limitations and weaknesses.

Now fully human, she relaxed her fingers and rested her cheek against the cold stone floor for just a moment. She could feel her entire body trembling from the strain as she lay sprawled on the rock-littered ground, could feel her life seeping away in the sticky warmth slowly spreading across her back, trickling down her side, pooling beneath her.

This would never do. Sotana gritted her teeth against the pain as she lifted her head. Between shallow, panting breaths she managed to spit out "Had enough yet, little drow?" Then, with a silent prayer and a conscious effort she hadn't needed since childhood, she called upon another form, one better suited to this complete absence of light.

Nilan slowly edged closer toward the voice. It was one he recognized, one he had heard before. “Your sister Lilira failed in her pitiful attempt to exterminate my kinsmen.” Nilan circled in the blackness, seeking his target as he continued, “Another stooge working for Ashstone? Come to finish the job, have you?” “Shadow” whispered in his mind, tugging at his thoughts, willing him to dispatch the inferior elven filth whose soul it had tasted. Nilan gripped the cursed stiletto blade tightly, his blood making it difficult to hold on to.

Guided through the darkness by bat's sonar, her worst wounds knit closed by the brief shapechange, Sotana huddled in her crevice somewhere along the cave wall. She breathed slowly and deeply, marshalling her resources, her forehead against her updrawn knees. Bone-weary, the druid listened as Nilan spoke.

The assassin was angry, keeping his weapons positioned to both attack and defend should the situation present itself. “Shadow” was hungry. “Fool!!! I could have destroyed her on that mountain ridge if I had wanted. You, on the other hand…. “Shadow” has tasted your blood, druid. Back off lest you desire to feed Vhaeraun’s blade.”

Sotana’s head snapped up as the drow’s words registered. Fury sent fresh adrenalin pounding to her drained muscles. He dared to mention Lilira's name! Exhaustion forgotten in the surge of emotion, she laughed, a hard, sharp sound. "You blame others to satisfy your own fears and paranoia! That is ever the way of the weak." Her voice ringing clearly through the darkness, she continued, "I do not fear such as you. Better than your blade has tasted my blood yet still I live while they no longer have tongue to tell that tale. Take care, Nilan. You have used Lilira for the last time."

The drow glared in the direction of the voice, hatred growing within him. “Used her!!! I have never used her. It was she that sought to exterminate my kinsmen, on the whim of a necromancer. I find it interesting that you have no qualms about your precious sister associating with the wickedness of liches and necromancers.” he growled, rage building from within. “She got off easy. I could have killed her, but I did not. In your world, I showed her more mercy than she showed my people, more mercy than she deserved. But you, druid…. Consider yourself lucky….this time. Cross my path again and it will be your soul that “Shadow” steals.”

Now her laugh was low, almost amused. 'You are surely welcome to try...invited even, should I find you interacting with Lilira again.” A soft murmur played through her mind, Lilira's words at their last meeting. Then that quiet tone faded beneath a stronger one. Teej, recounting her encounter with Lilira and Nilan on the mountainside. Sotana's voice hardened. "You twist her innocence to suit your needs, disregarding her well-being and her honor. Her wishes have protected you from me thus far, but no longer. She has withdrawn her protection and I come to bid you notice."

“You…and she…are like all the rest. I was a fool to think she was different. A mistake I will not make again.” Nilan staggered slightly, his feet brushing up against a soft object. Bending low he realized from the feel that it was his cloak he had cast off earlier in the fight. Sheathing his stiletto, he gingerly picked it up. Gasping as a sharp pain coursed down his shoulder, the drow fastened the cloak in place, wiping the blood from his hands.

"I care not how you view me, drow. But you would do well to heed me when I tell you your days of being able to use her for your own ends are passed." As she finished speaking, the druid began to move her fingers in a subtle pattern, weaving them back and forth across the air, sure of her target even in the darkness.

Without warning, the dark curtain winked out of existence as quickly as it had appeared, its magic exhausted. Yet still the interior of the cave was thick with shadows, any stray shafts of new sunlight caught and held by the steadily growing tangle of thorns the druid’s fingers wove across the entrance. No sign of the rogue. From her perch above the ground, her fingers continued their movement for a breath longer even as her eyes thoughtfully searched the cave. Then, her work complete, Sotana let her hands fall into her lap as she murmured gently, "Ah, but you mistake. I make no threats. I only seek to warn." With that, she uttered a few indecipherable words. And the shadows moved in response, rapidly spreading out of the cracks and crevices in the walls, along the floor, swarming toward their unseen target.

“Shadow” eerily whispered a warning, vibrating suddenly as the shadows surrounding the drow began to move. Nilan’s eyes readjusted to the cave’s natural light as a dark wave surged toward him. His eyes went to the cave entrance, a growing wall of sharp thorns closing the only exit. Cursing, the assassin scanned the area, searching for another exit…there were none. Then it came…. crawling, stinging, biting, … pain ….what was in the shadows, conjured by the druid, was now upon him. Spiders!!! The Vhaeraunite cursed, wincing as sharp fangs pierced flesh, burning his blood. They were all over him, crawling on his cloak, falling from the ceiling, working their way up his leg. Nilan violently tore the cloak from his shoulders, tearing open his tunic in the process. The cloak, magically designed to shield him from Lloth’s eyes if worn, was now covered in spiders. The assassin beat the cloak on the ground, sending spiders and gore in all directions as he cleared a path toward the growing thorns that enclosed the cave’s entrance like prison bars. The brand that had been burned into his chest by the Llothite priestess Itasha suddenly flashed crimson, instantly dropping the assassin to his knees in a sudden cry of pain. He felt a tug on his heart and writhed in agony, as if Lloth herself had plunged a sacrificial dagger into his chest.

Desperately, he reached for the cloak, wrapping it around him as the spiders continued to bite, their poison causing his muscles to cramp and spasm. The Llothite brand began to bleed and Nilan clutched his chest as he attempted to stagger to his feet. Stumbling, he dropped to one knee gasping, “Spiderbitch, …you…can’t…have…me!” He fought to regain his footing, hurtling himself in the direction of the growing thorn prison wall. “My soul belongs to Him.”

Sotana watched the drow, listened to his curses, and a wave of giddiness welled up inside, bubbling out of her throat in laughter. Finally, she had been able to meet him without pretense, give full rein to the emotions she had so long held back at Lilira's request. Resting her head against the rock behind her, Sotana relaxed into her laughter. Then her laugh broke in the middle as exhaustion crashed down on her once again, stealing her breath and blurring her thoughts. No longer supported by her rage, she felt the full toll of the past few weeks. Too long since she had slept, having tended to only the most vital needs in her obsessive tracking. Too much blood lost. Too much emotion felt. But her message had been delivered. If the rogue were wise, he would respect her warning. Perhaps he would turn out to be stubborn, in which case they would certainly meet again. For now, it was time to sleep and heal. With another satisfied look at the flailing drow, she sighed a single word and the dark cave before her eyes abruptly disappeared.

Nilan stumbled, his free hand grasping the growing vine tightly as he hauled himself up to a standing position. A cry of agony burst from his blood-stained lips as his chest burned again. The assassin muttered a word to Vhaeraun and the sentient blade seemed to take on a life of its own. “Shadow” left his hand and floated briefly in mid-air before it struck at the growing vines. Slashing, piercing, and slashing over and over again, the blade of Vhaeraun’s chosen began to disintegrate the wall of thorns. In no time, a gaping hole appeared and the assassin staggered through. The sun was already in the sky but the trees were thick, shielding him from the worst of its blinding rays. Nilan raised his hand, and the sentient blade glided into it. Gripping the dagger, the drow scraped the remaining spiders off his cloak and leggings. Some fell to the ground, curling up at his feet, others burst in a popping sound of bubbling gore. Nilan spat, stepping on the ones still moving and crushing them beneath his black boots. The poison still burned in his veins and Nilan moved away from the dead spider bodies, collapsing against the trunk of a tree. Blood slowly oozed from the Llothite brand and Nilan felt the ground and surrounding trees lurch and spin. Closing his eyes in exhaustion and pain, the drow uttered a prayer to Vhaeraun and slipped into unconsciousness.

Dappled sunlight filled the druid’s view, playing across the bark of a tree, glancing off the still water of a stream. One final call on the power at the heart of her...and a small marmot curled up against the sun-warmed earth and slept.

P.S. THE END

Hey guys, I'm curious and would like some feedback. The format of creating this story via replies to each other's posts worked well for what Nilan and I wanted to do but we want to know how it worked for our audience (you never know when it might come up again!). Did it go on too long? Not long enough? Just right? What do you guys think of the whole idea?

Thanks for a very well written RP exchange. I'd like to read more. It seems you discussed the general direction of the story before starting to write; the action was pretty seemless passing from one writer to the next. Thanks again for taking the time to write for us.

I think it was superb! Very well done. I will admit to finding the exchange a bit taxing at first, because reading it as each increment was posted felt a bit as if it was just a series of one-upsmanship, and I wasn't sure if there was going to be a resolution that would be mutually satisfactory for both authors. Since I did not want to pre-judge it, I left it be, only glancing to the ending on each new post to see if it had come to a conclusion. When I saw the words "THE END" I went back to the beginning and started reading again, and it was well worth the wait. You two did a fantastic job of supporting each other, and your writing styles are very complementary.

Of course, Ashiwi would be grinding her teeth over the fact that you didn't finish that damnable drow off when you had the chance. She was truly hoping for a "happy ending."
