Time to plan...
Yes, yes, this is another "exotic getaway" thread.
Laurel, you keep asking me about this, can we please start planning? You mentioned summer, but you know Mexico is out during the summer. Are you thinking Canada or Alaska? Did you want a cruise, or a flight to a resort with a multi-day stay in one location? Juneau in the summer?
It's either that, or we wait until post-summer for a trip down south. Neo wanted scuba, so we could always plan a week at Aruba, Jamaica, (oooh, I wanna take ya to) Bermuda, Bahama, (come on pretty mama) Key Largo, Montego, (baby why don't we go) off the Florida keys. Of course, there's always Cancun, Belize, Cozumel, the Canary Islands, or any of another dozen small destinations with crystal clear blue water and white sands.
So, north or south? Hiking in the northern forests or diving in the southern coral reefs? Deep sea fishing, or ... deep sea fishing?
I'm up for anywhere, but I'll need to find a travel partner this year, especially if we go on a cruise.

Re: Time to plan...
I'm voting for the second deep sea fishing!
I like cruises and all inclusive resorts. I'm hesitant to go into South America, too much turmoil too many anti american forces.
Maybe we should consider renting a house somewhere in the USA and keep our $$ local. Hawaii, Virgin Islands, an apartment in Miami, a cabin in Alaska, DC? New York? I'll be in San Diego in May for business. I'd love to spend a week someplace and do a dinner cruise every night!

What about a cabin in Alaska?
Re: Time to plan...
I think you guys should take Corth and Kiryan on a forced community service "vacation" to an Indian reservation. Reservations are exotic...like third world country exotic.

Dude, I live in Oklahoma ... I want to see something NEW!
Besides, I have a terrible weakness for Native American men. I'd get myself in trouble.
What about one of those resorts on Vancouver island where they specialize in deep sea fishing?

It's probably derived from the old expression.. Indian make little fire and sit close. White man make big fire and sit far away.

I am also not quite sure about what Avak means, although I am glad I am not included in this forced vacation.
Re: Time to plan...
I realize it was not funny now...I have only a vague idea of what I was getting at! Some convoluted dig about service-oriented vacations and people that hate forced charity or something...just ignore all of that.

Nothing wrong with a service vacation, I did habitat for humanity did church / camp building in Mexico. I don't mind helping people out when its my choice. I just require the government not to take my money and give it to someone who needs it. I can do that on my own if I want to.

You mean give it to someone politically convenient.

Question seconded and passed! I just came across pictures from that gathering recently and tried to explain to my wife how bad he was, she just couldn't understand why he came if he was hellbent on not having fun.
Re: Time to plan...
Yeah Leah, Virgil would be jealous if we all came to visit you. We'd have to bury him in the sand and kidnap you.
Neo, when you said you don't want to do South America ... did you mean southern North America, or actual South America? Is Mexico completely out? Not all of it is in such turmoil, and most of the touristy areas are pretty safe.
There's an 8 day from San Diego that includes two days in Acapulco, and a day each in Zihuatenajo and Manzanillo that starts at $389.00.
Or a 10 night from San Diego with a day in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Puerto Vallarta, starting at $522.00.
8 nights from Fort Lauderdale, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Nassau starting at $499.00.
Or how about a 12 night cruise from Honolulu to Ensenada for $799.00? I don't think I'd be too fond of having to fly to Hawaii and back from Mexico, but I'd love to see Hawaii.
We could get a flight from California and about four nights in a Hawaii hotel for 8-900.00.
A flight from Florida and four nights in Mexico for around 600.00..
How about a few nights at the Hyatt Regency in Cancun? Or at the JW Mariott, since it's got five stars?
Or I'm still all about Vancouver Island and deep sea fishing. Or a cruise around Alaska.
Anything strike your fancy?

Re: Time to plan...
Those all sound great, particularly the 10 nights from San Diego or the 8 nights to the virgin islands.
Mexico and the caribean nations are ok... for now, I'm very cautious with a bunch of idiots like chavez running around and the relative lawlessness combined with the targetting of Americans by extremists. I really would like to see Brazil someday.
Gosh I'd hate to fly to Hawaii only to cruise back to the states... If we do Hawaii... I'd almost rather pitch a tent than stay in a $150-200 a night hotel. The one Laurel and I stayed in was really not worth it. Crappy bed, smallish smokey room, expensive parking ect... It was so bad it made the $500 a night room seem like a deal.
Deep sea fishing, Alaska both sound great too!

Re: Time to plan...
We should talk to Dartan's dad (who books cruises apparently) and find out what the slickest deals are out there ect...
Re: Time to plan...
Well pffffft. I posted a long reply with prices and destinations, but timed out and lost it all.
The gist was: pick your destinations and I'm all for price shopping if Dartan's dad can get us a good deal.
One option I was looking at is back-to-back cruises. We could fly to Miami and take an Eastern Caribbean 5 day on 11/01/2010, get back to Miami on 11/06/2010 and immediately get back on a 5 day Western Caribbean. The two cruises are $309.00 apiece, so $618.00 for ten days on the water.

Re: Time to plan...
That would be interesting.
The best parts of our last vacation were in no particular order:
1. Port of Call
2. Days at Sea on the cruise (cuz of the food)
3. Talking shit about the Messiah and Canadian socialism with Teflor.
4. Reading the Twilight series
5. Halloween in the big easy
The parts I probably would've skipped.
1. the ruins
2. the shopping (yes i know, i shopped more than you guys, but thats your fault for getting me off my ass!)
3. the expensive drinks on the ship
4. the pube in my bed at the homo hotel
My ideal vacation would probably be an all inclusive resort / cruise (so I don't have to consciously think about how much every drink costs) that has very cheap activities and movies. Also, if the place where I slept had a 3 person tub that would be great (I find a 2 person tub just isn't comfortable enough for 2 people).

Hey, I thought I told some of you on ooc not too long ago that Virgil has changed. He's no longer jealous and possessive because he has matured since then. He actually trusts me now. We have complete trust in each other now and love each other deeply. Things are different now (because after 5 years of being together we know each other better too). That gathering was years ago.....So you have nothing to worry about.
What was the time period for your new get together? although I'm not big on cruises, i've also never been on one. They seem expensive right? For just being on a boat? What if we were hiking around through jungles and going on adventures in cities we've never been too! We could have a really crazy time heheh, meet some interesting locals.

Re: Time to plan...
Sorry Muma, I won't believe it until I see it. He wasn't exactly 12 when we met him.
I dunno about cruises being expensive. I thought the one we went on was fairly cheap when you compare it to $150-200 a night hotels anywhere worth going... and the food was great. I seriously ate 2-3 entrees per meal and it was just fabulous. The advertised price is probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the real price though.. you have to consider the addons they stick you with including a flat "service fee" for each day of the cruise (basically automatic tips).
The worst expense part was paying for plane tickets to meet the boat and a hotel because I'd have to start shooting people if I tried to arrive day of and missed the boat and didn't get a refund. It was nice when we did it cuz Halloween was a day or so before we left for the cruise, so Laurel and I just did Halloween in N.O and got on the cruise the next day (or the next I forget). Oh well the ridiculous cost of the excursions was a big negative too, they wanted something like $80 bucks a person to go see chitziculaneanfij or whatever and it was like a 3 hour ride on a bus there, 1 hour at the ruins and 3 hours back. Seriously, people are fing stupid.
Hawaii wasn't too bad. Laurel and I did a submarine ride for like $40 a piece. We did a dinner cruise for about $60 (plenty to drink). We did some sort of ghetto sea world for $20 or so. I thnk the Dole pineapple plantation was free. We drove around the coast of the entire island of Maui for fun (did you know they have COWS in hawaii I was like wtf cows!). I wanted to go scuba and surfing, but Laurel was pregger and couldn't go and I didn't want to just leave her on the beach and alone for hours.

Re: Time to plan...
Well for one thing I can't eat 2-3 entrees per meal unless I want to feel sick. Lately if and when I go to a buffet I eat one really full plate and feel way too full. So when you're say 1/2 or 2/3 the price, that means about how much? and what if you added in the plane ticket cost too? We talking the price (with all that added together) round-trip of a plane ticket to europe? Hell I know a place in utrecht, netherlands where there is a huge sweet ass cheap hostel, and by the way the netherlands isn't very expensive in the first place. (especially if you eat food mostly from the grocery store, instead of restaurants heheheh)
Also Corth, I think sharing a tent with you might be pushing it too far, hehe. It would be really cool if we all went hiking through jungles though. that's something I haven't done yet!
Another thing, Virgil wasn't 12, but he was anywhere from 23-24? I can't remember what year it was that we went together. So anyway, not everyone matures at the same age. Actually when I think about it, if someone thinks they've learned everything at that age, or has completely matured, then they're just wrong, and immature, lol
Well it sounds like you and Laurel had fun going to Hawaii and New orleans. I've never been to either place.

Re: Time to plan...
I was talking mental age =)
I did England and Ireland in hostels, not an experience I care to have again. The hostels were in general small, dirty and really not that cheap. I wouldn't mind going back to Europe, but I'm not going to a country that hates America aka France. If we are considering Europe, maybe we should consider Japan!
I'd totally love to do a jungle or an african safari, but it just feels too dangerous to me to be running around in africa with a bunch of islamists running around or even in south american jungles with a bunch of leftists and narcotics trafficers running around.
Laurel and I spent about 2k total on the cruise, hotels and flights, that includes some champagne and flowers I bought and all the other crap I bought in Mexico including 6 fifths of liquor. Excluding the watch.

Re: Time to plan...
Monday, May 10th, Baja 4 day cruise from Los Angeles for $259.
We will be in San Diego the week prior to this so it could work out. I somewhat ran the idea past Kiryan and he called it "interesting". But seriously, he's been a huge jerk lately so I could understand not wanting to be stuck on a boat with him for 4 days.
I was also thinking of looking into the all inclusive resort stuff. If May 7th to May 14th ish time isn't good for people, we can do something else, but being near Los Angeles at that time would make it easier for travel than from Billings, MT.

Re: Time to plan...
Since we're having trouble figuring out what to do, I suggest we list what's good in our areas.
In the mid-atlantic region on the east coast US, we have plenty of mediocre beaches that are and aren't completely slammed with people.
Assateague Island National Seashore
http://www.nps.gov/asis/index.htm
Widely known for the island's native feral midget horses, Assateague Island is a popular national park, a relatively short drive from Ocean City, MD.
Shenandoah National Park
http://www.nps.gov/shen/index.htm
Damned fine outdoorsy stuff. Week long canoeing trips, mountain hiking, challenging natural rock climbing, and country cooking at low, low prices.
These are the cheap, family friendly options. I'll come back with more and different stuff later.

More Mid-Atlantic stuff:
Visiting Washington, D.C.
http://washington.org/
Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States of America. It's known worldwide for its collection of museums, including the many museums of the Smithsonian Institution. See the original US Constitution and Bill of Rights, explore the national archives or Library of Congress. International cuisine features just about every part of the world somewhere in the city and monuments to our nation's history stand throughout the city. Great day hike if you want to see them all.
Visiting New York City
Bring money.

International cuisine features just about every part of the world somewhere in the city and monuments to our nation's history stand throughout the city. Great day hike if you want to see them all.

Re: Time to plan...
I think your wife would die, Kiryan. Or kill...
Re: Time to plan...
What is wrong with you, Kiryan? 1. You are not a cub. 2. You are married to the most wonderful woman in history. 3. Profit
Re: Time to plan...
I'd be down for mid-Atlantic stuff, but I've never been there, so I'd want to see alot if we went that direction. I have a sister in Kentucky we could visit if we were in that part of the country. If ya'll wanted to venture to Montana, we have a large house to keep people and there are some things nearish. Yellowstone can be done in a day and is within driving distance. Glacier National Park I hear is very cool, but it is a longer drive, so we would need to arrange some place to stay around there. I think even Mt. Rushmore is near enough we could get there if we left early and got home late, but I don't know if it would be worth the travel (6 hrs each way, I think).

:O Glacier National Park - I'm in on that, but I'll have to get my ranger on and cross country ski to backcountry camping. Or at least hike around. A lot of you all have kids now, yeesh.
Re: Time to plan...
Kelly? Any thoughts? What are your plans at this point?

Question seconded and passed! I just came across pictures from that gathering recently and tried to explain to my wife how bad he was, she just couldn't understand why he came if he was hellbent on not having fun.
When the hell did you get a wife?!?

Last January :) Also got a baby now as of November :)
Re: Time to plan...
I know I haven't been around much, but I had been on a few times the first half of last year and didn't hear anything about any of that. must have been well kept secret.
Re: Time to plan...
Not really. Guildies knew, others knew just not everyone prolly. I blame Lilithelle.
Re: Time to plan...
Did somebody say "camping in a national park"?
I'd be all about Yellowstone or another national park. As long as I don't get eaten by a bear. If I get eaten by a bear I'll be pissed.
