Ashiwi

Postby Teflor Lyorian » Sun Apr 03, 2011 4:24 am

I'd like to ask the TorilMUD community to keep Ashiwi and her family in their prayers and/or hearts tonight. I'm a little light on details, but Ashiwi is under excellent care and I will try to post more about her condition/prognosis as early as Monday.

Whelp, Ashiwi's situation is improving, so whatever you all are doing, keep it up. They took her off the paralytics today and her daughter said she was shaking her head and looking pissed off when someone said that she might be in the hospital for a couple more weeks. Prognosis is good. Thanks for your thoughts.

From what I understand, she was in for a fairly routine procedure that turned sour. Or something.

Update: Ashiwi's ventilator is probably going to come out tomorrow. I spoke with her daughter again today: Ashiwi is awake and refuses to go back to sleep. She waved hi when her daughter told her that I was on the phone and affirmed positively when asked if I should be smacked upside the back of my head. So everything seems to be in good working order. I passed along everyone's well wishes and got off the phone so they could have a little family time.

This'll probably be it for updates until Ashiwi can speak. I'll post again if I hear anything new.

Ashiwi left me a voicemail today, very exciting. She says she's getting better.

I got to speak with Ashiwi for a while today, she's recovering and talking about real food, as opposed to the different flavors of jello they keep giving her.

I passed along the well wishes of anyone who posted or spoke to me about it. She seems pleased.

Thank you so much for your love and well wishes. What Tef said is, indeed, true. The jello was terrible and he should be smacked on the back of the head.

I went in for a surgical procedure which went south. I was closed as routine, but began to bleed out for no known reasons. I was in a small hospital in a local suburb, so once I came anything close to stable I was lifeflighted to a larger Tulsa hospital, where I spent a week in a coma and two weeks re-learning how to use my bodyparts. I have been inundated by the love and blessings of my family and friends, and can honestly say I have experienced something amazingly life-touching. I shouldn't have lived, but I did.

I'll be taking a few days to get my thoughts in order, then I'll post the entire adventure in my standard mind-numbingly drawn out and tedious fashion on my FB.

Damn I missed being at home. And almost dying really made me miss mudding, too. Love you guys!

Scary..

At least the ending of the story is good. We're all very happy you're still with us - even if your politics are wrong. :)

Dude...

I spent a week in a coma. When I awoke I had almost no motor skills. Any small accomplishment wore me out and left me drained. It took me about a week to manage to work the remote control, but by the time I found it, got the TV on, and found the first news station (which happened to be MSNBC), I didn't really have the strength to do anything but slump against my pillows and listen.

I remember thinking "I went to sleep for a week and you guys went and made it worse!" I studiously avoided politics the rest of my stay.

Carl was about the fifth person who sent me a message asking for a longer explanation of what happened, so I finally decided to put up more of an answer. I'm still typing out my own thoughts on it, and that may take a while, but this is for anybody who may be interested.

Truth be told, I went in for bariatric surgery. I've fought with my weight for so long, dieted like a fiend, worked out with a partner 2-3x a week for the last two years, and after being diagnosed with a bad thyroid and COPD I finally gave in and bit the bullet. I went to a little hospital in Owasso, OK. It's actually a great hospital, it was where my second grandbaby was born, but there's no real trauma capability or heavy equipment there. Its big selling point is that the people are really nice.

They brought me out of surgery and the doctor left for another appt. I tried to tell them something was wrong, but they seemed to think I was just another whiny patient until I started vomiting blood like I had an alien baby in my stomach. In the next couple of hours I got ten pints of blood plus multiple pints of blood products as filler. I bled out most of my orifices freely, and me and my body reached that silent moment where I knew I was going to die, and I was okay with that. When my daughter begged me to stay and attempted to use the humor of "But where will I go when I lose everything and have nothing else if you leave me???" I forced the entire op room to stop and pay witness as I told them that if anything happened to me, my property and everything on it belonged to my daughter. One of the nurses broke down crying and had to leave at that point. Everybody knew I was going to die. All my veins collapsed and a specialist was rushed in just to tap my veins to keep fluid running through them. Several of the staff had to be excused from the room because the stress got to be too much for them. For those who stayed, I owe them everything.

They finally got the surgeon back in, they opened me back up, doublestitched every seam ,closed me back up, and filled me back up with tapwater, which I'm pretty sure is all they had left. As soon as they got me closed back up, they lifeflighted me to a larger hospital where they could pull angiograms and have an unlimited blood supply. I bloated so much from the transfused fluids that parts of my body actually turned a rather interesting shade of lavender.

I spent a week in a coma, sometimes dead to the world (and looking like it) and sometimes railing at these people moving and talking around me who wouldn't stop and listen to me yelling at them from inside my head. I don't know how I made it through, honestly. Owasso has really good tap water, though. I know my room never had fewer than three friends or family rotating around me, and the flood of prayers and well wishes was neverending. Once I realized I was going to live, however, I was a woman on a mission.

When I was on the paralytic and somebody asked how long I was going to be in ICU, the nurse replied "about three weeks" and they noticed me shaking my head "no." When I was comatose I found ways to trace messages to my family on the bedsheets. When I came out of the coma and they expected me to be bedridden for weeks, I told them to put a potty chair in my room, because I refused to use that little pan, and oh, by the way, I was going to walk to it myself. When I was moved out of ICU after just over a week I refused to let them go easy on me. I walked my own rounds and forced myself to re-learn how to get my hands to do simple tasks. I gave myself new tasks every day. Today I would relearn how to wash my hair. Tomorrow I would even use conditioner. The day after I would use both and brush it, too.

My surgery was on the 30th. They expected me to be in the hospital no fewer than six weeks. I came home yesterday, April 9th. Nice to see you guys!

Kelly,

You're one of the few people I can say I've actually met from this on-line experience and I am glad you got better so quickly. I don't really have words, but I just want to say I'm glad you're alright. Reading this, this morning before work was a bit of a shock. I had no idea.

Not that Jennifer or I live anywhere close these years, and I know most everyone says it, but yeah if there's anything we could do, just let us know.
